  • Are any of Jimbo's talks besides Wikimania openly available?
  • Jimbo's talk on FLOSS Weekly [1] is available under a CC license. It's non-commercial, but I don't think that should give you any problems. jacoplane 19:02, 11 November 2006 (UTC)
  • I assume content from other Wikimedia projects may be included too, even if "Wikipedia" is in the name? Wikinews comes to mind, although there are so many MSM daily and hourly news podcasts available that it's probably not worth doing that unless a Wikipedia version could have a very heavy encyclopedic bent.
  • Would AAC be at all acceptable as an optional format? Yes, ogg is often the only possibility, but if there ever was more than one full-length spoken article included in one episode, the enhanced AAC chapter breaks would be very useful.

--Interiot 04:44, 4 October 2006 (UTC)

I was thinking mp3, aac, oog for ease of distro (and compatibility w/ players). We could call it "WikiMedia Weekly" but I think the Wikipedia name is slightly more known around the nets. Hopefully we can get Jimbo on on occasion - same w/ Tim and Brion :) -- Tawker 05:56, 12 October 2006 (UTC)

There are some advantages to doing "true podcasts" in .mp4 file format. Wikinews and Wikiversity have podcasts that can be found at the iTunes store by searching the podcasts for "wiki". --JWSchmidt 02:50, 14 October 2006 (UTC)

Ideas

Well, I might as well start a discussion on how to improve this thing, seeing as I haven't seen any yet. The Episodes are quite long and might not be good for people with slow connections and such, so maybe splitting the netcast into segments maybe.. say, 10-15 mins long. Smaller file sizes, and people can download the segments they want to hear. Your thoughts? - Zero1328 Talk? 09:44, 15 October 2006 (UTC)

Hmm, yeah, I think we could do something like that. I was thinking a lower bitrate mp3 (that can be streamed w/ the player on the site) would be a good way to start things off. Breaking it into 4 seperate audio files might make a little fun on the editing -- Tawker 16:17, 15 October 2006 (UTC)

Project directory

Hello. The WikiProject Council has recently updated the Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Directory. This new directory includes a variety of categories and subcategories which will, with luck, potentially draw new members to the projects who are interested in those specific subjects. Please review the directory and make any changes to the entries for your project that you see fit. There is also a directory of portals, at User:B2T2/Portal, listing all the existing portals. Feel free to add any of them to the portals or comments section of your entries in the directory. The three columns regarding assessment, peer review, and collaboration are included in the directory for both the use of the projects themselves and for that of others. Having such departments will allow a project to more quickly and easily identify its most important articles and its articles in greatest need of improvement. If you have not already done so, please consider whether your project would benefit from having departments which deal in these matters. It is my hope that all the changes to the directory can be finished by the first of next month. Please feel free to make any changes you see fit to the entries for your project before then. If you should have any questions regarding this matter, please do not hesitate to contact me. Thank you. B2T2 14:34, 26 October 2006 (UTC)

The word podcast

If you feel like a new logo, ask me on my talkpage. It's not a request, just a suggestion - without wanting to cause any offence, the current logo does give the impression of 'I was made in MS Paint!'. —Vanderdeckenξφ 09:47, 7 November 2006 (UTC)

Hey, I like that effect. :) This is a good offer, though, and we'll keep it in mind if we ever need a new artist, or if JWSchmidt can't help for any given episode. Thanks! --Daveydweeb (chat/patch) 10:34, 7 November 2006 (UTC)

Self references

You may want to remove some self reference from the podcast. While I found the wikipedia parts interesting the parts talking about speech to text etc didn't seem necessary. Less is more? -Ravedave (help name my baby) 06:17, 11 December 2006 (UTC)

Sure, that's entirely possible. Generally, we'd prefer to mention as much feedback as needs mentioning, but inevitably that means we need to refer to ourselves a fair bit. We'll try to cut it down. :) Daveydweeb (chat/review!) 08:16, 11 December 2006 (UTC)

Wikipedia Day Awards

Hello, all. It was initially my hope to try to have this done as part of Esperanza's proposal for an appreciation week to end on Wikipedia Day, January 15. However, several people have once again proposed the entirety of Esperanza for deletion, so that might not work. It was the intention of the Appreciation Week proposal to set aside a given time when the various individuals who have made significant, valuable contributions to the encyclopedia would be recognized and honored. I believe that, with some effort, this could still be done. My proposal is to, with luck, try to organize the various WikiProjects and other entities of wikipedia to take part in a larger celebrartion of its contributors to take place in January, probably beginning January 15, 2007. I have created yet another new subpage for myself (a weakness of mine, I'm afraid) at User talk:Badbilltucker/Appreciation Week where I would greatly appreciate any indications from the members of this project as to whether and how they might be willing and/or able to assist in recognizing the contributions of our editors. Thank you for your attention. Badbilltucker 19:40, 30 December 2006 (UTC)

Hello from WikiCast

Hi Tawker, Fuzheado and others...

In your article on Wikicast you made out it was aiming for a 24 Hour stream :-) It's not.. At the moment it's focusing on building a programme library...

You are more than welcome to ask for a 'spokesperson' in #WikiCast to explain the project further. I don't currently have Skype so you would need to find one of the other contributors.. ShakespeareFan00 01:32, 9 January 2007 (UTC)

Friggin sweet! JoeSmack Talk 03:09, 9 February 2007 (UTC)

Transcripts suggestion

I see you've been having some serious problems with transcription. It might be easiest to just play the podcast in your earphones, and simultaneously parrot it into a microphone for a single-voice, steady recording, that would work better with speech recognition software.--Pharos 02:24, 23 February 2007 (UTC)

I get confused enough just trying to string together a coherent sentence. I'm sure someone else would be able to try this out, but that my efforts would be... well, hilarious. -- Daveydweeb (chat/review!) 02:41, 23 February 2007 (UTC)

Phone-in possibility

Not everyone, particularly non-technically-minded potential interview subjects (your average librarian, for example), would be so Skype-savvy. I'm not sure of the technical details, but perhaps it would be possible to set up a phone line connection. Hey, if Wikinews can do it...--Pharos 20:56, 24 February 2007 (UTC)

It's certainly possible to do this, one way or another; one possibility is that listeners can ring a dummy Skype account and leave a message. Then, we could play it while recording the episode itself, and talk about whatever point was raised -- sort of like a phone-in conversation, just with a few days' lag between the message and our response. :) Daveydweeb (chat/review!) 01:29, 25 February 2007 (UTC)
I bet if you asked nicely, you could just "borrow" the Wikinews line for this purpose ("Press 1 for Wikinews, press 2 for..."). Unfortunately, it's hardly ever been used. n:User:IlyaHaykinson is the one who runs it and pays for it.--Pharos 02:18, 25 February 2007 (UTC)

delivery

I believe the delivery method for the signpost has worked well. It lets people who are interested know when a new edition is ready, and it provides valuable advertising by leaving the information on many peoples talk pages. Perhaps User:Ralbot could also deliver Wikipedia weekly updates.-Ravedave (Adopt a State) 18:33, 1 March 2007 (UTC)

Don't you see? People would just die to hear the easter ogg... because it's a "bonus", even if it's something ridiculous. Soon every other right-thinking podcast will want their own easter ogg, and maybe folks will finally be enticed to learn how to use the audio files on Wikipedia.--Pharos 22:08, 9 March 2007 (UTC)
Hmm. This gives me an idea. -- Daveydweeb (chat/review!) 13:50, 10 March 2007 (UTC)
Pharos, your ideas are intriguing to me, and I wish to subscribe to your newsletter. Honestly though, I do think it's an interesting idea. If we had sponsors I think it would be a cool idea to say, "We're giving away a brand new iPod each week, but the details on how to enroll are only in the Ogg version of our podcast." -- Fuzheado | Talk 16:18, 11 March 2007 (UTC)
That free iPod better come with iPodLinux, or else we'll be rather defeating our purposes (the installation software can't play ogg). Oh, and I'd like to apologize about my newsletter this month, the Xerox at the public library was running low on the toner :)--Pharos 05:40, 12 March 2007 (UTC)
You're right. Maybe we can give away a player that only plays Ogg. Actually they are not that expensive in Taiwan. We could get some folks there to donate perhaps? :) -- Fuzheado | Talk 06:47, 12 March 2007 (UTC)

Seperate work in progress with produced work?

One of the things I find strange about WP:Weekly is that the main page contains stuff for the producers of WP:Weekly, not just the consumers. Shouldn't the main page be: This is what it is, episodes, and then a section linking to other pages to handle the internal stuff (eg tipline, content suggestions etc)? -Ravedave 22:51, 9 March 2007 (UTC)

We should really re-organise the existing page, but it's got a lot of inertia going since there's so much already there. I'll try to do something about this at some point, but it might be easier just for someone to {{sofixit}} for us. :) Daveydweeb (chat/review!) 13:49, 10 March 2007 (UTC)

Release times

Try to keep the release times a bit more regular(excluding special Eps). Recently we've been releasing regular episodes mid-week and that'll just make us more stressed. If we stick to a certain day, (like uh, Friday night, so people can listen Saturday morning) We'll have a regular schedule and it'll be easier to sort out. If we finish recording the next one in three days, think of it as time to refine the episode, or a short break, instead of releasing it ASAP. - Zero1328 Talk? 14:59, 22 March 2007 (UTC)

I concur. Having a regular release schedule would make it a lot easier to follow the podcast. JoeSmack Talk 15:28, 22 March 2007 (UTC)

Recent vandalism study

Wikipedia:WikiProject_Vandalism_studies just finished Study 1 that analyzed 100 random articles' total 668 edits during the months of November 2004, 2005, and 2006; the findings suggest that in a given month approximately 5% of edits are vandalism and 97% of that vandalism is done by unregistered editors. I've commented out/hidden the WW template at Template:Announcements/Community bulletin board, till a new episode is released. I'm going to begin removing the WW template from the bulletin board 2 weeks after the last update. We have, (yes, sorry for the very slow response) - the big question is, could anyone listen at the really weird hours we record. Too many timezones is a bad thing. -- Tawker (talk) 23:04, 20 November 2007 (UTC)
Hi Guys. Can we revisit this one again in the new year. Just made a note (bottom right) - one to a skypecast room, the other to WikipediaWeekly (WW). The idea is to offer ONE skypecast room (at least to start) so we might have some standard place for remote groups to get together in real time (and perhaps record), and one podcast station for the ones who can't.
Don't know if technically this is the way to go as you've got a good thing going already (am talking to the Skypecast beta guys about when it may be geting solid). It it seems many WMF and project groups would contribute, listen to and support WW, especially if we had an WW edition which brought the spoken news together in a concise programme. Anyhow, give it come thought would you? You can talk over at the ComsProj site. Happy New Year. --Simonfj (talk) 21:50, 28 December 2007 (UTC)

Wikipedia is not finished

Ah! Please stop staying that there is nothing significant left to add to Wikipedia! Besides the many stubs left to expand and incomplete and unreferenced articles left to brought up to a respectable level, here are a few important articles in my own fields: Practical Education (a important work on educational theory by Maria Edgeworth and Richard Lovell Edgeworth); Political Justice (one of the most important political treatises in the 18th century by William Godwin, the father of anarchism); The Wanderer (novel) (a novel by Frances Burney, one of the most important novelists of the eighteenth century); and L'Ami des Enfans (a French children's book by Arnaud Berquin, which was important in the formation of the genre of children's literature). I have no interest in personally being on the show, but I might be able to find someone who would have subject matter expertise to discuss the topics on the show. The subject would be all about images in coordination with an event being planned for June. See Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Image Monitoring Group#Wikipedia Image Cleanup Month .28June.29 for more information about what is planned. Length of podcasts and transcripts or summaries

How long is each episode? Could that information be put somewhere, as it helps to know how much time to put aside to listen to an episode. Also, I see Wikipedia:WikiProject WikipediaWeekly/CurrentTranscriptions started but never really kept going. Would it be possible to restart that? Carcharoth (talk) 20:12, 8 April 2008 (UTC)

Episodes are usually about an hour for panel and a little shorter for interviews. If you would like to restart the transriptions of our show, I wont stop you, but it was stopped because it took to long and speech to text formatters weren't working too well. 12:27, 9 April 2008 (UTC)

ID3 tags

Hi all. I was just wondering if it'd be possible for new episodes to be tagged better before upload, to make them easier to find on portable devices. I subscribe to some podcasts from the BBC online service, and not only do they have an artist/album name filled out, but they have a short summary in the "Comments" tag, and usually a pretty album cover to boot (e.g. the Radio 4 Friday Night Comedy podcast), which would be particularly nice considering you go to the trouble of creating a new one for each episode. Just a suggestion for the overall polish.

In a separate issue (and sorry to bring up technical troubles here), my podcast receiver always seems to download 100% of episodes, but then sit there and never realise they're complete, and so download them again the next time I open it up. Do people have these problems in iTunes and things, or is this unique to Juice? I'm confused 'cause it's only your podcast this happens with.

Cheers for the entertainment and discussion! -- Doubious (talk) 13:03, 23 April 2008 (UTC)

Firstly, We used to have an image for the podcast, but none of us really have the time to make them before we release them> Secondly, I have no problems downloading the podcast from iTunes. Comment on the "2 million" article discussion

My opinion is that only the largest ones should be added. We simply cannot maintain that many articles. For example, I recently found a vandal IP and checked its contributions. It has inserted junk into something like 20 Pakistani-related articles, and I spent the better part of an hour going back and cleaning it up. The stuff has survived for months! The bus factor is when a person determines the continued the existence of a project. I think that we can acknowledge Fuzheado as the WikipediaWeekly bus driver because without him, no new episodes of the WW are recorded. Thanks, GerardM (talk) 09:04, 26 August 2008 (UTC)

Wiki Campus Radio

Wikiversity is attempting to get WikiCampusRadio going again, there is also the WM:Radio proposal on meta, Some coverage would be nice :) ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 21:13, 24 October 2008 (UTC)

Stop complaining about the decline of mailing lists

You guys complain about the decline of those lists all the time, and as far as I'm concerned, their decline is a good thing. Those lists are old-fashion and elitists; only the old boys of Wikipedia check them, and we don't want changes to be decided by that group alone. The Wikipedia talk space and meta.wikimedia are a much better places for discussions where everyone can contribute. Great changes have come out of places like the Village Pump, with wikipidians of all stripes contributing. --Arctic Gnome (talkcontribs) 20:36, 7 November 2008 (UTC)

How to leave feedback?

"You can leave comments at the unofficial off wiki homepage. It's located at: www.wikipediaweekly.org."

Well, sort of. What you can do is comment on a particular episode, but the comment does not actually appear on-screen. There's no way to comment on the show in general, and commenting on older shows is both difficult and immediately invisible. This isn't really a great medium for discussion.

"Alternatively you can comment at the page of the episode itself on-wiki, or for more general comments, at the talk page of the project."

I'm sure this works great, but what exactly is "on-wiki" and where is "the talk page of the project". Is this "the talk page" being referred to? If so, the lack of any feedback from the hosts makes this forum somewhat suspect.

Hi Maury - wow, I think fuzzy and Liam have been a little more active here - this is the talk page in question - mind you email also works wonders. The website itself is fixed now, so it should be easier to post now. -- Tawker (talk) 05:48, 7 October 2009 (UTC)

Wikimania '09

Hi guys! I started to listend to your podcasts and I very much like it! I will be on this year's Wikimania as my research deals with Wikipedia as transnational/lingual space. I plan to conduct interviews which explore the different aspects of transliguality/nationality (projects like Babel, user experiences, interlanguage links fights etc). As I do record them i wondered if you might be interested in my 'to-be-collected-material' or we might even think of some kind of cooperation... I am very much looking forward to hear from you, best per wiki-mail as I am still learning to understand the various communication channels here :-) --Jojoona (talk) 09:20, 17 April 2009 (UTC)

Date unlinking bot discussion

There is a community RFC about a proposal for a bot to unlink dates. Could you run something about this in the next Signpost? This issue has been rather heated in the past (including a very long arbitration case), but I hope we can gain consensus for this rather limited proposal. The discussion will be open for two weeks. The proposal is at Wikipedia:Full-date unlinking bot and the RFC is on the talk page. Thank you. --Apoc2400 (talk) 10:54, 22 June 2009 (UTC)

Wikinews

Would you guys consider playing Wikinews segments somewhere in your casts? We're somewhat interconnected considering many news articles are sourced via sources found in Wikipedia and sometimes vice versa. davumaya 10:15, 23 June 2009 (UTC) http://en.wikinews.org/wiki/Wikinews:Audio_Wikinews

Link

The Skype talk link fails in new versions of Skype on Windows. (I know, but its RC 7, free, and its not going to start auto-offing until March. Smoother video than Linux too.) -Stevertigo 05:38, 11 September 2009 (UTC)

Wikimania

You going to 'tango' with podcasting from Wikimania? 62.56.107.20 (talk) 15:44, 6 August 2009 (UTC)

I feel lonely without my regular infusion of WW joy... +sj+ 21:22, 20 September 2009 (UTC) Also, I showed the list of WW covers to a friend and casual Wikipedian, who honestly thinks this is the best thing since sliced talkpages. Maybe you should do a covers calendar for the year.

Latest podcast not working in iTunes.

Down?

The RSS feed hasn't worked for a while now so I checked the website, which only responds with a database error. Is everything okay? ——Rich jj (talk) 12:23, 21 January 2010 (UTC)

4 months without an episode :(  Skomorokh  20:39, 5 February 2010 (UTC)
True. But even with no new episodes, shouldn't the whole feed and website still be available? If I just discovered this podcast today, I couldn't try it out. ——Rich jj (talk) 17:10, 10 February 2010 (UTC)
The website is now working for me but the Podcast feed still returns an error. By the way, the last episode at WikipediaWeekly.org is "Episode 85: Felipe Ortega and Ed Chi" from December 5, 2009, which means it's only been 2 months without an episode. 85 isn't currently included on the episode list at WP:WWPC, making it look like 4 months. ——Rich jj (talk) 12:23, 16 February 2010 (UTC)
WikipediaWeekly and Wikivoices both remain in my RSS feed, as a sad memorial and alert in case either are resurrected. I liked learning about community developments and controversies and it made me a more involved editor. Now they both appear to be completely dead, without even any discussion. I'm sad. ——Rich jj (talk) 17:11, 12 January 2011 (UTC)

We're back!

Hi all, just wanted let you know we revived Wikipedia Weekly as of Wikimania 2011, where we recorded three new episodes. Hope that you enjoy them and leave us feedback. [3] -- Fuzheado | Talk 00:18, 13 August 2011 (UTC)
