Nepal is divided into 14 administrative zones (अञ्चल, "anchal"), and 75 districts (जिल्ला, "jilla"). The 14 administrative zones are grouped into five development regions (विकास क्षेत्र). Each district is headed by a chief district officer (or CDO) and is responsible for maintaining law and order and coordinating the work of field agencies of the various government ministries.

These zones are given names after the special river, mountain or some marks in those zones.
- Mechi - Mechi River
- Koshi - Koshi River
- Sagarmatha - Sagarmatha Mountain (Mt. Everest)
- Janakpur - Land of Janaka (King) and Janaki (Sita Goddess)
- Bagmati - Bagmati River
- Narayani - Narayani River
- Gandaki - Gandaki River
- Lumbini - Birth Place of Lord Buddha (Siddhartha Gautam)
- Dhaulagiri - Dhaulagiri
- Karnali - Karnali River
- Bheri - Bheri River
- Rapti - West Rapti River
- Seti - Seti River
- Mahakali - Mahakali River
