However, it is important to note that a rajput may have his gotra named bhardwaj, typically speaking, a person with bhardwaj surname are brahmins . Claiming of bhardwaj gotra by rajputs goes back to ancient times when rajputs clans put their kula pandit names as their gotra who were brahmins, to show respect for their services for rajputs.
