*
** It's usual when companies change names to retain former names, and to establish WP:RS for the new name. May be too soon for a move, but anyway the former name is useful and not confusing. That is why we have R from former name. 85.67.32.244 (talk) 15:23, 26 July 2021 (UTC)
*** This wasn't a simple change name. The company was bought out by NEC. Retaining the old name would be tantamount to keeping Microsoft Azure title if Google bought it out and put it under its corporate umbrella. The current company has nothing to do with the Northgate umbrella and all to do with NEC, and that is reflected in the name. Furthermore, there are sources in the article itself about the name change. Folk309 (talk) 15:50, 26 July 2021 (UTC)
****Indeed, the article documents the name change so it is pertinent to have a link from its former name. Other articles refer to that name when describing past events, e.g. Pick operating system, and it would be anachronistic to update them. So there are two issues:
:::::# whether to rename (move) the page, or is it too soon? Formally the company was bought by NEC in Jan 2021 but the trading name not changed until around April. Sources for the name change look like press releases from primary sources. It may or may not be too soon, so let's have a full discussion.
:::::# whether, if moved, redirects and links to the old name should be deleted or updated. Obviously I would oppose that.
:::::Were Google to buy Microsoft Azure we would almost definitely keep a redirect for it, if not spin out a new article. Again, that's a possibility here if the NEC and former Northgate offerings are so disparate. :* An RM for this was opened on 8 July and closed on 15 July (Talk:Northgate Public Services#Requested move 8 July 2021) as not moved. I think this makes it ineligible for TR anyway. To relist at RM 11 days later may be seen as premature. 85.67.32.244 (talk) 16:38, 26 July 2021 (UTC)
:*:That was a fairly dodgy close, as there was only one oppose vote, and it completely ignored the WP:NAMECHANGES section of WP:COMMONNAME. I would urge Folk309 to contact Lennart97 and ask them to re-open the discussion (although I agree with the IP editor below that the target should be "NEC Software Solutions" without the "UK", as that returns ~30k google results). --Ahecht ([[User talk:Ahecht|TALK
PAGE]]) 19:37, 26 July 2021 (UTC)

Revision as of 07:46, 27 July 2021

If you are unable to complete a move for technical reasons, you can request technical help below. This is the correct method if you tried to move a page, but you got an error message saying something like "You do not have permission to move this page, for the following reasons:..." or "The/This page could not be moved, for the following reason:..."

  • To list a technical request: edit the Uncontroversial technical requests subsection and insert the following code at the bottom of the list, filling in pages and reason:

This will automatically insert a bullet and include your signature. Please do not edit the article's talk page.
  • If you object to a proposal listed in the uncontroversial technical requests section, please move the request to the Contested technical requests section, append a note on the request elaborating on why, and sign with ~~~~. Consider pinging the requester to let them know about the objection.
  • If your technical request is contested, or if a contested request is left untouched without reply, create a requested move on the article talk and remove the request from the section here. The fastest and easiest way is to click the "discuss" button at the request, save the talk page, and remove the entry on this page.

Technical requests

Edit this section if you want to move a request from Uncontroversial to Contested.

Uncontroversial technical requests

  • Wikipedia:MasterChef India (Hindi season 4) is invalid. Must create Wikipedia:MasterChef India (Hindi season 4) before requesting that it be moved to MasterChef India (Hindi season 4).– I have accidentally committed a blunder while trying to fix a typo in the article name — you can see there was an unnecessary space after the first bracket. I did not select the correct namespace prefix for the said article, and now it shows up as Wikipedia: MasterChef India (Hindi season 4) instead of just MasterChef India (Hindi season 4). I tried moving the page again with the correct prefix but it wouldn't, saying that "the page already exists." Kindly help. AllyJay50 (talk) 06:56, 27 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Administrator needed
Put requests that require an administrator (e.g., because the page to be moved is move-protected or the target is salted) here.

Contested technical requests

There is an established convention here, see Category:Lists of shopping malls. The better solution would be to edit the articles to include only shopping malls. 162 etc. (talk) 16:07, 26 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
True but many of articles in the category you are referring use "Lists of shopping centres ..." instead "Lists of shopping malls" which proves that the established convention is not relevant for the name of the pages. It makes more sense to simply renaming the article than deleting information on it.198.103.184.76 (talk) 21:24, 26 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Requests to revert undiscussed moves

See reply below. Raymond3023 (talk) 03:16, 27 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Both, this and above one were still an undiscussed page move that was inappropriately made against the talk page discussion and stood firm for many years.[1][2] Raymond3023 (talk) 03:16, 27 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
