Life

Gymnastics career

In 1988, five-year-old Zhang Shangwu entered the amateur sports school in Baoding, Hebei, and was selected to the national gymnastics team at the age of 12. although he is only 1.54 meters tall, but his arm strength, once by the national gymnastics team's key cultivation.

Zhang made his international debut at the 2001 Summer Universiade in Beijing. He was able to win gold medals in rings and in the team event.[2] Zhang though was less than 18 years old at the time, not a college student, and thus in order to participate in the competition, the leadership let him pretend to be a freshman at Beijing Sports University, the older team members posing as a juniors. In response to media questions about academic qualifications, the national gymnastics team responded that Zhang, a student at Beijing Sports University, was later dealt with by the national team for serious disciplinary violations, and the student qualifications of the Northern Sports were also revoked.

Later the same year, he competed in the 35th World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Ghent, Belgium. Zhang finished sixth in the parallel bars event with a score of 9.550 and ninth in rings with a score of 9.220.

In early 2002, Zhang ruptured his Achilles tendon during training, and thus did not perform well at the team trials for the 2004 Summer Olympics. After ten months of rest, he decided to return to the Hebei provincial team.[3]

Post-retirement

In June 2005, he voluntarily retired from the Hebei Provincial Sports Engineering Brigade after receiving compensation and old-age insurance payments totalling RMB38,000 due to a ruptured Achilles tendon in both legs. Because of the training, Zhang Shangwu's education is only the second level, want to go to sports colleges to study, must be recommended by the team to send. He believes that this request was rejected because of a conflict with the coach, and another reason is that the coach and the leader were not given gifts.

In early 2007, he was arrested by Tianjin police for theft and sentenced to two months in prison. In July of the same year, he was detained by the Criminal Investigation Branch of the Beijing Xuanwu Public Security Bureau and jailed for a second time on suspicion of stealing laptops, mobile phones and cash from an athlete's apartment in Beijing. In July 2011, the incident reignited the public debate about the situation of sports athletes in the national system after they retired after they were discovered selling art on the streets of Wangfujing and other places in Beijing.

After Zhang Shangwu's situation was exposed by the media, Chen Guangbiao, a philanthropist with the title "China's First Good", said that Zhang Shangwu was welcome to work his company. Subsequently, on July 28, 2011, Zhang Shangwu was officially hired as "Deputy Minister of Public Welfare of Love" and "Ambassador Spokesperson of Public Interest Image" of Jiangsu Huangpu Renewable Resources Utilization Co., Ltd., with a monthly salary of more than  RMB, but left his post.

Zhang Shangwu was jailed for a third time in 2019 for pickpocketing.[4] After being released from prison in March 2020, he worked as a worker at a construction site.
