Her sister is Jenna Bush. They are known as the first First Twins both because they are the children of the US President and because they are the first twin children of a sitting President. Barbara is named after her paternal grandmother, former First Lady Barbara Bush. She graduated from Yale University with a degree in Humanities.

When her father became Governor of Texas in 1994, Barbara attended St. Andrew's Episcopal School in Austin, Texas. In 1996, Barbara began attending Austin High School, graduating with the class of 2000. She followed her father's legacy by choosing to attend Yale University, her father's, grandfather George H.W. Bush's, and great-grandfather Prescott Bush's alma mater.
