Career Overview

Dunn is a hyphenate artist: actor, writer, and knitter. He often combines these talents and mediums in his work.

Acting

Dunn trained in theatre performance at York University and after graduation branched out into film and television. He obtained the lead role in the critically acclaimed short film, Like A Dream: The Mario Lanza Story (1989), written and directed by John Martins-Manteiga.[7] It screened in the 1990 International Critics’ Week Short Film Competition at the Cannes Film Festival.[8]

A few years later, Dunn landed a role on TVO/PBS’s The Adventures of Dudley the Dragon, an award-winning Canadian children’s television series akin to Barney and Friends. Dudley the Dragon finds himself in a foreign, modern world but is assisted by two 10-year-olds and a host of guest characters played by Canadian celebrities (Jackie Burroughs, Graham Greene, Ann-Marie MacDonald, Rick Mercer, Eric Peterson, Mary Walsh). Dunn played Dudley, concealed in an eight-foot-tall green dragon puppet suit for seasons three through to five (1995 – 1997).[9]

Other film and TV appearances include War of the Worlds (1988); Kung Fu: The Legend Continues, the movie (1992); Fox’s Class of ’96 (1993); Kung Fu, the TV series (1994 - 1996); 20th Century Fox's comedy, Trapped in Paradise (1994); Strange Justice (1999); the action movie, Free Fall (1999); CBC’s Chasing Cain II: Face (2002); Showtime’s Queer as Folk (2002); Street Time (2003); and Little Mosque on the Prairie (2008).[10]

Dunn continued to act for the stage throughout with theatre credits including Romeo and Juliet (Ford Centre, Shakespeare in Action, 1996);[11] The Affections of May (1994), Dads! The Musical (1995); The War Show (1996), A Flea in Her Ear (1997), and Don’t Dress for Dinner (1999) for Drayton Entertainment.[12]

In the early 2000s, Dunn performed in Merlin[13] and The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) for Toronto’s Young People’s Theatre (2001/02).[14] He joined Ergo Arts Theatre around the same time as the lead in a province-wide tour of Billy Bishop Goes to War,[15] a monodrama about the Canadian WWI fighter pilot.
