Flippa is a private marketplace for buying and selling online businesses, based in Melbourne, Australia, Austin, Texas, United States.[1] It was founded in June 2009 by Mark Harbottle and Matt Mickiewicz.

History

In 2009, Flippa invented the space for buying and selling digital businesses and has achieved #1 status globally as the marketplace to buy & sell digital real estate and online businesses. Flippa connects Amazon sellers, Shopify store owners, bloggers, SaaS providers, app developers, content creators, social media influencers and start ups with a pathway to exit.

Originally founded by Mark Harbottle and Matt Mickiewicz as the SitePoint Marketplace,[2] Flippa was spun off as a separate website in June 2009.[3] By 2015, it had traded more than $140 million in websites, domains, and mobile apps.[4]

Flippa’s proprietary Intelligent Valuations Engine and matching algorithm accurately values businesses and matches them directly with qualified buyers.

In a time where there are more digital assets than there are homes, Flippa’s marketplace is at the heart of the new economy for entrepreneurs, side hustlers and small business owners, with transactions from five thousand to fifty million dollars. We help our community to realize value, invest, make money and start new digital journeys.

With expert advisors servicing deals, Flippa powers 12,000 deals annually. They have a global team of expert advisors to help with business valuations, assist with sale documents, optimize buyer and investor interest and manage deal flow.

They have a network of over 600,000 buyers & investors - individuals, companies, private equity, VC and family offices all on one platform - making them the world’s largest marketplace of digital assets.

The majority of Flippa's revenue comes from selling online businesses including content sites, SaaS businesses, Ecommerce businesses, Apps, digital services, marketplaces and more.[1] The highest value sale to date was an App Protfolio, which sold for US$35,000,000[5]. The most expensive domain name sold was stockphoto.com,[6][7][8] selling for a buy now price of US$250,000. Other notable websites and domains sold through Flippa have included Mark Zuckerberg's former website Facemash,[9] overnight success story shipyourenemiesglitter.com,[10] and AllAboutCookies.org, a Content site about tracker cookies which sold for US$5,200,000.[11][12][13]

In May 2015, Flippa bought Domain Holdings, a domain name brokerage firm based in Florida.[14]

On August 27, 2015, Potato Parcel was sold on Flippa for US$42,000.[15][16] A few months earlier, the viral website shipyourenemiesglitter.com from creator Matthew Carpentor sold for US$85,000.[17][16]

On September 20, 2021, Flippa announced a US$11,000,000 Series A capital raise led by Sydney-based venture capital firm OneVentures.[18]

On March 16, 2022, after acquiring Richard Patey's Alts Cafe, Flippa announced the launch of ALTS by Flippa, an alternative asset investing newsletter and Discord community.[19] Written by Richard Patey, the newsletter shines light on "alternative investing opportunities, from online business to crypto & NFTs".[20] As of November 2022, its Discord community boasts over 2000 members.[21]
