The 3rd Separate Assault Brigade (Template:Lang-uk) is a brigade of the Ukrainian Ground Forces formed in 2022.[2]

The brigade, established in November 2022, was a merger of the Azov SSO, Special Operations Forces units which were created by former Azov Battalion veterans.[3]

History

The brigade, which was established in November 2022, emerged from the Azov Special Operations Forces (SSO) and initially comprised veterans of the Azov Regiment.[3] Since then it is a fully operational combat unit within the Ukrainian Ground Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.[4] The formation of this brigade was strategically designed to create a highly mobile, well-equipped, and extensively trained force capable of engaging in both defensive and offensive operations.[3] According to Andriy Biletsky, as of January 2023 the brigade was deployed in the Battle of Bakhmut.[5]

An important milestone for the brigade occurred on 24 February 2023, when President Volodymyr Zelenskyy personally presented the Regimental Colour during a ceremonial event.[6]

The commander of the second battalion of the Azov Special Operation Forces, Kyiv regiment is Dmytro Kukharchuk.[7]

The commander of the "Azov Tactical Group", which is part of the 3rd Special Operations Brigade is Andriy Biletsky.[8]

The brigade's soldiers took part in the liberation of Kherson and Kherson region, as well as the battles for Bakhmut. On January 26, 2023, it was announced that the regiment would be reorganized into the 3rd Separate Assault Brigade, and on February 24, the brigade was presented with a battle banner. On April 12, 2023, the brigade's official media resources announced the start of recruitment for the unit.[9] In May 2023, it was one of the first to report successful offensives in the Bakhmut district.[10]
