INDUCKS or Inducks is a freely available database aiming to index all Disney comics ever printed in the world. It is an international project[2] which provides indexes of around 80,000[3] Disney comics publications worldwide. It is distributed with its own licence.[4]

History and name

Inducks was founded by Harry Fluks (from the Netherlands) around April 1994[1]. Its first contributors came from the Disney Comics Mailing List[5] that was launched in August 1992 by Per Starbäck from Sweden. Following discussions and expanding on information exchanged on the mailing list, Fluks created a database to organize comic indexes, and called it the Disney Comics Database.

A German member suggested the name Inducks as a cross between "index" and "duck" (for Donald Duck). It was playfully written I.N.D.U.C.K.S. (now usually Inducks) to resemble acronyms seen in Junior Woodchucks comics.[1] While the administrators claim "I.N.D.U.C.K.S." does stand for something, no meaning has been selected to date, though several suggestions have been offered by the administrators themselves, including "Internet Database for Uncle Walt's Comics and Stories", "International Network for Disney Universal Comic Knowledge and Sources", and even "Inducks: The Name for the Disney Universe Comics Knowledge System".[6]

Data details

Today the database lists publications, stories, characters and authors which are cross-referenced. Each story is given a unique storycode so that reprints (often from all over the world) may be found for any story.

Inducks integrates previous studies and research works, with permission of the authors[7] as well as its own research. Thanks to contacts with authors[8], it provides credits to stories which are not credited or sometimes wrongly credited in Disney comic-books (in particular, most Disney comics weren't given credits until the 1980s or 1990s). It also contains information about unpublished Disney comics stories.[9]

The main interface to Inducks is a search engine, browser and website abbreviated COA, which is daily updated based on Inducks data, and is available in thirteen languages[10]. While COA uses Inducks data, it is not part of Inducks itself, but it enables users to navigate and search data which in its raw form consists of very user-unfriendly text files[11].

Use as a source and in publications

Inducks is used as a source by comic book historians in articles devoted to Disney comics[12] and parts of the database have been published in book form.[13] or in comic journals[14] A few Inducks projects, specific to certain countries, have been the subject of articles[15]. Inducks is also used by Disney editors around the world[16].

It is mentioned as a source by scholars in general studies about comics or litterature[17], referenced in books[18] and has been the subject of criticisms, from a purely bibliographical point of view[19].

Inducks has once in a while given talks and held meetings in comic-book fairs in Italy, such as in Lucca in 1997, with Don Rosa and Marco Rota[20] and in Reggio Emilia in 2007[21]. In 2004, it won an Internet award[22] from afNews, an association of Professional cartoonists in Italy.
