Precautions for the future
Do you know anything about bots and or bot-making? Or if you don't, do you know anyone who does? The reason I ask, I'm just preparing for future events I would like a bot that will revert all edits made to my userpage if they are made by anyone who isn't me. Feel free to copy this message to the other user you know, assuming you know one, of course assuming further that you don't know how to make bots. Thankyou for your time.— <font color="Green">Dæ</font>dαlusT@lk <big>/</big><small> Improve</small> 18:59, 15 May 2008 (UTC)

I am a teacher in California

I am trying to help them understand that Wikipedia is not a valid source for information. Most students don't quite get this, since pretty much everybody can update this Wiki. There are few scholars that update information or include sources. I was hoping to be able to show them that they can't actually trust all of their source for research on the internet.

Can you please let one thing go?

Thanks, Chris —Preceding unsigned comment added by Cp1955 (talkcontribs) 05:12, 1 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Reverting of IGE article

You reverted changed made to the following article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IGE

The majority of this article is a copy&paste that was originally posted on mmobux.com at http://www.mmobux.com/articles/760/the-rise-and-fall-of-ige

Since Wikipedia states: "Do not copy text from other websites without a GFDL-compatible license. It will be deleted."

Formatting?

Do you intend to just revert the incorrectly formatted addition that I removed or are you going to leave it incomplete? I removed the info because of formatting issues, you added it back with the same bad formatting. KellyAna (talk) 21:17, 4 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I only meant to reinsert the next episode title, I didn't notice the formatting issue until I looked again and changed browsers. You reverted three edits: [3] [4] [5]. I just reinserted the first one, but I see what you meant and I corrected it here. I actually thought you were referring to the second and third edits in your edit summary, but accidentally reverted the first edit, too. Eh, it's all fixed now. I think the two castaways to Exile has confused people. It used to be easy enough to just copy and paste the next episode, but now you have be careful this season. -- Gogo Dodo (talk) 23:56, 4 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia List of Notable Egyptologists

The ongoing editing of (and occasional tampering with) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Egyptologists has omitted or removed a number of notable Egyptologists who were originally listed and now contains the names of a number of individuals who are virtually unknown in the field. It might serve the readers of Wikipedia better to simply provide a link to a site such as the international directory of Egyptologists: http://www.iae.lmu.de/iae/ide/ide.htm

Professor Richard Wilkinson Editor, Directory of North American Egyptologists. http://www-oi.uchicago.edu/OI/DEPT/RA/ABZU/EGDIR_INTRO.HTML —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.244.60.76 (talk) 23:27, 7 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Since I know very little about the field, I will defer to you about if the link should be added. You are welcome to add it in to an external links section. -- Gogo Dodo (talk) 23:55, 7 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your reply. It's difficult in that the list itself has problems and needs to be adjusted but a complete list would be just way too long. I'd be happy to help sort it out if you wish. Please feel free to email me at egypt@u.arizona.edu if you would like to work on it together. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.244.60.76 (talk) 00:55, 8 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Maybe the best way to take care of the problem (if you would want to use your wiki editing experience as I have none!) would be to simply put a statement under the current header paragraph that a complete list of Egyptologists can be found at http://www.iae.lmu.de/iae/ide/ide.htm then change the heading "Notable Egyptologists" to "Egyptologists in Wikipedia" and have the list with a short statement such as "The following individuals, or others, have added biographical summaries to Wikipedia: This would solve the problem of the glaring omissions as well as the questionable additions. RW —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.244.60.76 (talk) 01:09, 8 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I've made some changes to the article that might help clarify that the list is incomplete. Your wording suggestions are not quite the usual style, but I think I have added in wording that follows the spirit of what you are trying to say. A lot of the lists of people on Wikipedia are often incomplete because the general style of Wikipedia is to include only individuals with articles on Wikipedia. It cuts back on people adding vanity entries or not-yet-notable people. So I am sure that some notable Egyptologists are missing as nobody has yet to write an article about them.
Upon further reading, a link to the IAE was already at the bottom of the article, but I changed it to link directly to the IDE. As for editing Wikipedia, it's quite easy as you have already figured out how to leave comments. Editing an article is not that much different. -- Gogo Dodo (talk) 05:59, 8 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. It certainly helps to stress that the list is incomplete. The only problem that remains is that of the individuals listed as "notable Egyptologists" who are not Egyptologists - such as the RUGBY player, Michael Rhodes. I guess that comes down to whether Wikipedia style articles are accurate or not. If you don't want to clean up the list together I can certainly try redoing it. RW —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.244.60.76 (talk) 15:10, 8 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ouch. That's bad. He's been in there since October 2007. He's gone now. I guess nobody noticed when he was added (it happens on lower profile articles like this one).
I checked everybody on the list on make sure their article stated that they were all Egyptologists, fixed a few links, sorted the list and so on. One thing that happened with the list clean up is that Abdul Latif al-Baghdadi ended up with a dead link (if you'll excuse the bad pun). I don't know the notability status of this individual. As I mentioned earlier, dead links (also known as "redlinks") are generally frowned upon in these types of lists as they are not helpful to the reader and tend to invite vanity entries. -- Gogo Dodo (talk) 17:19, 8 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Great- dropping the Rugby player is certainly a good start. So what would you like to do about the remaining ones who are not "Notable Egyptologists" - including the vanity entries and entries for people who are unheard of in the field (which together with all the notable omissions makes the list virtually useless as titled? Wouldn't it be simplest to solve that problem with at least a somewhat more accurate heading such as "Egyptologists with Entries in Wikipedia"? "Notable Egyptologists" is explicit that the individuals are notable (many of whom are not) and implicit that the list is complete (which it is not). Richard. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.244.60.76 (talk) 18:12, 8 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Was there somebody in particular that should not be listed? All of the remaining entries have links to articles that state they are Egyptologists except for the one I mentioned above. -- Gogo Dodo (talk) 18:21, 8 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Not listed as "Notable Egyptologists"? - yes, several, as I said. Either the title should be changed or the list redone. Changing the title would be far easier. R. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.244.60.76 (talk) 18:31, 8 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I think we were crosstalking there. I thought you were saying that somebody currently in the list should not be in the list because they are not notable. I think what you're really saying that some Egyptologists who are notable are not in the list. Which is probably true, which is why I modified the lead the other day. I would not recommend altering the header to what you suggested because that is not the normal method of showing that the list is incomplete. As for adding to the list, that's fine if the Egyptologist has an article on Wikipedia or an outside source can be cited that they are indeed notable enough for inclusion, but just haven't been written about. If we just start adding in lists of names without providing a reason and citations for their inclusion, it is likely that it will be deleted. -- Gogo Dodo (talk) 18:46, 8 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I understand what you are saying here but it's actually not the omissions that are the main problem - there are really far too many qualified Egyptologists to list on the page - as may be seen in the directories such as the DNAE or the IAE Directory - The real problem is the accuracy of heading a list "Notable Egyptologists" when many obviously are not. RW —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.244.60.76 (talk) 19:05, 8 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ah, I see. There is a set of procedures for articles to be deleted for lack of notability. See Wikipedia:Deletion policy or more specifically Wikipedia:Articles for deletion. Since my knowledge about the notability (or lack there of) of the current people listed is not that great, I would not be comfortable proposing their deletion or deleting their entry from the list. You could create an account and propose deletion yourself, but since you are involved in the field of study, it might be seen as a conflict of interest. If you do decide to create an account, you might be interested in joining Wikipedia:WikiProject Ancient Egypt. -- Gogo Dodo (talk) 19:57, 8 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I followed your earlier advice and made a reasonable change. I simply changed "Notable Egyptologists" which, as I have tried to explain, was ridiculous given the list - to "Egyptologists". —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.244.60.76 (talk) 20:02, 8 April 2008 (UTC) The changes you made at the beginning of the article seem good to me and I think that the article should be fine as structured now. Thanks for working together to get it cleaned up. RW —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.244.60.76 (talk) 20:48, 8 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

How do we prove that we are the writers/owners of the content? The so-called copyrighted material is owned by us (Semperviva). All the content we wish to add including the pictures is our own material.

And the other question. >If you wish to copy content from your website into Wikipedia You mean that on this/our website we should referre to wikipedia?

List of commercial failures

This list was informative and notable. It complied to WP policies. Your speedy delete is regrettable as Im sure that had you taken it to AfD, it would have been kept. Im not a fan of speedy deletes as this one has proved. Do you have notes on why you think it was speedy deletable? From my memory, the list was encyclopeadic. I deleted List of commercial failures last year because it was a redirect to a nonexistent article as noted in the deletion log. Upon checking the deleted revisions, it was a redirect to List of miscellaneous commercial failures which was deleted by consensus of an AfD at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of miscellaneous commercial failures. -- Gogo Dodo (talk) 06:28, 17 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

How was it a "debate?"

"A corporate owned and sponsored attack on Barack Obama" seems much more truthful. If Disney News labeled it, "The Greatest Thing to Happen Since Sliced Bread" would we be expected to call it that? I thought encyclopedias -- and Wikipedia -- were about the truth, not the network spin. Either way, I won't change it again, but I am disappointed in you as an Admin. for reverting the article to Disney News' spin and marketing rather than what the event honestly was. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.220.59.16 (talk) 07:44, 17 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Your message to me clearly indicates that you have a bias and your edits of "President Obama" and "the future President" is not a neutral point of view. -- Gogo Dodo (talk) 07:50, 17 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The President thing was a stupid move on my part and I apologize. It was only after someone changed the truthful description of, "a corporate owned and sponsored attack on Barack Obama" back to ABC's PR term, "debate" and it was meant to show how absurd using words like "debate" or "President" are if they are not true. ABC/Disney News' forum was not a debate and I still say that term should be changed back, but I will leave it up to your discretion as an admin. Is Wikipedia being sponsored by Walt Disney? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.220.59.16 (talk) 08:02, 17 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
You were the one who added corporate owned and sponsored attack which is not a neutral point of view. You made the President Obama change before it was reverted back, so your claims are not quite valid. As for your question, Wikipedia is not sponsored by anybody. See who owns Wikipedia. -- Gogo Dodo (talk) 08:25, 17 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Admin Coaching

Would you be able to coach me? Since I'm approaching 1000 edits, I'm considering an RfA.— dαlusT@lk / Improve 07:08, 19 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

If I could give a quick suggestion, you may want to take a look at User:Gonzo fan2007/Admin to help better understand all the technical abilities given to an admin and the pages that an admin uses.
Daedalus969, honestly I would recommend waiting until you get some more experience under your belt to go through WP:RFA. RFA is very demanding and many users have very high standards. Many users will not even consider a user who doesnt have more than 3000 edits and 3 months experience, with some users having even higher standards such as certain article writing experience (FAs, GAs, FLs, etc.) and experience in admin related areas. To give you an example, when i went for my my RFA, I had 5500 edits and 9 months of solid editing, and Gogo Dodo had over 10,000 edits and 8 months of solid editing when he went for his RFA. (I would also recommend reading through our RFA's for useful info).
All that said, I think you are definitely on the right track. Some suggestions would be to find an article and try and bring it up to GA/FA status, participate in XFD's discussions, give your opinion in discussions around Wikipedia and do what you are doing, just do it for a little longer so you get more experience (i.e. run into more experiences). And on a side note, Gogo Dodo is a great example of what to do here, whether he trains you or not you can learn a lot from just watching how certain admins act and what they do on the 'pedia. Good luck and keep up the good work.
Gogo Dodo, sorry for the long ramble on your talk page :-) « Gonzo fan2007 (talkcontribs) 07:26, 19 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I actually have been participating in a few of the discussion areas like AfD, AN/I, etc. I was just trying to meet some of the criteria posted on some page regarding RfAs. I can't remember what page it is. Regarding time spent here, I've actually been here for awhile, I'd have to check my edit history to see when I really began.— dαlusT@lk / Improve 07:34, 19 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I think the biggie for some people is going to be the edit count and the lack of mainspace edits. But like I said, if you give User:Gonzo fan2007/Admin a good look over and click some of the links that should help a lot. Also, consider reading Wikipedia:Administrators' reading list, which will help a lot. Also, feel free to ask any questions to me or basically any admin, I know I would be glad to answer any. Also, it does help a lot to have a WP:GA, WP:FA, or WP:FL under your belt. « Gonzo fan2007 (talkcontribs) 07:40, 19 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the advice, I didn't really think I could do FAs and that stuff, at least not yet. Everything else you mentioned(XfDs, RC patrolling, WP:ANI, CSD tagging, etc.), I actively participate in. I patrol the RC with a script that allows me to rollback(I have the rights to do so too) the vandalish edit, and warn the user whether against vandalism or a test(*loves the Lupin script despite how buggy it is*). I think I have joined a few conversations in ANI, but I can't remember, I do know I have participated a bit in AN/I. Last but not least, I add tags where necesarry, especially for CSD, and AfD where applicall(spelling?).

While I understand your concern, I do not see how a simple article about stationery with no reference to stationery providing business and ventures can complete the picture. There is a thin line between understanding if something is meant to be for only advertising purposes or for simple information dissemination.

The article as it is does not have any practical references to stationery businesses. I think it is missing that aspect. I recommend that if not just this one particular link I mentioned, then we should add some more links perhaps, staples, officedepot etc... Adding value to the article. Awaiting... Help

Hey Gogo, it's Dae. I am requesting help on the article Repo Man (1984 film) because another editor keeps adding this huge glaring list of trivia, which I'm sure violates WP:NOT. For a little history, the list was created by various anon IPs who were just passing through the article. Also, if you look at the article itself w/o the section, it looks great. The addition of the list just makes it look messy. I've suggested several times the editor Cowicide insert the text in the article body text, such as the plot, but it seems my suggestions go ignored. I would RfC, but last time I tried that I didn't even get a response until weeks after. Help would be much appreciated if you can find time in your schedual. Hi Gogo, I want to set straight an untruth Daedalus has spoken of me when he says above, "I've suggested several times the editor Cowicide insert the text in the article body text, such as the plot, but it seems my suggestions go ignored." As you can see here I said, "I'll help move stuff or whatever is needed when I get some time soon. Regards..."

Also, Daedalus' accounting of the history of the article is absolutely untrue where he also says above, "For a little history, the list was created by various anon IPs who were just passing through the article."

In reality, there are close to 20 actual registered users who contributed to that "trivia" section in one way or another over the course of years. As seen in the history they are (to name most, not all) - (Unidyne, NapoliRoma‎, Oydman, Robert‎, TheQuandry‎, BlackAndy, Karlos the Jackal‎, ChuckyDarko, Osbojos, ChargersFan, PondScumEsq‎, Variable‎, MeltBanana, Acedian, Draconiszeta, Hoary‎, Grendelkhan, BerserkerBen‎, Trelvis‎, Davejenk1ns & Cowicide) This list is on top of the numerous "anon IPs" that Daedalus refers to.

As I'm sure you'll agree, I do NOT want to start any form of conversatoin with Daedalus here about this. I just want to set straight some untruths said about me and the situation in his statements above. I think the links and info I provided speak for themselves, and would like to finally just move on to bettering the Repo Man article. Cowicide (talk) 12:43, 1 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Gogo, could you please reinforce to Daedalus what you said on his talk page above, specifically where you recommend to "stay away from each other until the issue is settled. Continued discussion on talk pages is not being productive". Daedalus is ignoring your advice and continues to post on my Talk Page. I've asked him repeatedly to only discuss the article with me and nothing more, but he continues to ignore my pleas and now he's ingnoring your advice as well. He is also continuing to address me with distracting personal issues on the actual talk page of the article as well here, here & here instead of focusing on the article issues. It would appear he's trying to bait me, when I'd rather just ignore him and work on the article. He's becoming very tiresome and a distraction from working on the article. Hi, I noticed that we both recently put warnings on this page, but I'm wondering if there was some confusion. You issued a seperate warning shortly after I did, apparently for an NPA at Bill Whicher. However, the only edits from that account were the vandalism to Censorship and another set of vandalisms to Mark Foley. So, while it seems a second warning was clearly warranted, I'm not sure it was the right warning. Did I overlook something perhaps, or should the NPA warning be changed to a level 2 vandalism warning? I'll be watching your page, so feel free to reply here, and thanks for your time. Doc Tropics 23:32, 30 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You didn't overlook anything or issue the wrong warning. My warning was for an attack page by the editor that I deleted. I usually issue the attack warning when I delete an attack page instead of the uw-vandalism* warnings. If they keep it up, I switch over to uw-create3 or uw-create4 warnings. -- Gogo Dodo (talk) 06:23, 1 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

New Project

Myself and several other editors have been compiling a list of very active editors who would likely be available to help new editors in the event they have questions or concerns. As the list grew and the table became more detailed, it was determined that the best way to complete the table was to ask each potential candidate to fill in their own information, if they so desire. This list is sorted geographically in order to provide a better estimate as to whether the listed editor is likely to be active.

If you consider yourself a very active Wikipedian who is willing to help newcomers, please either complete your information in the table or add your entry. If you do not want to be on the list, either remove your name or just disregard this message and your entry will be removed within 48 hours. The table can be found at User:Useight/Highly Active, as it has yet to have been moved into the Wikipedia namespace. Thank you for your help. Useight (talk) 17:29, 3 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Gogo Dodo,

i am writing to you on matter of the deletion of the "Darren McCullagh" article. I feel that this Wikipedia page was deleted unfairly and i was not given an oppertunitiy to plead my case. In my local town of Strabane the character of Darren Mccuallagh has historic significance. I feel that the speedy deletion of my article was unjust, although my Wikpedia contributions, which was also my first contribution, was not as detailed as one might hope, i feel that it was inconsiderate of one to delete my work without a proper consultation. However i understand that you are a very busy person who is often called upon to spend their free time dealing with inconsiderate people intent on misusing Wikpedia and its benfits, at the same time i assure you that i am ont one of those people and i have no intention except to inform the world of our local "rebel" if you give me the oppertuninty to edit the Darren McCullagh page i will make it my priority to correct my mistakes and make the Darren Mc Cuallagh page one which will benifit the Wikipedia Community. Even if you feel that there is no oppertunity to make my contribuiton fit for you website i ask that you allow me the oppertunity to recover my contribution.

Brent's American Dream

I received your message. Brent Bradford is a student here at Northeatsern Univeristy and featured in the school news paper. I submitted what was previously written by themanbrent and quoted in the paper on the internet begging wiki page. This is not a form a self promotion because I am not Brent. His site has been getting attention from our student body and I am passing on the information. Can you explain why it can't stay? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Transformerman (talkcontribs) 08:11, 9 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

OK, I see your point. Thanks for clearing that up for me. No hard feelings. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Transformerman (talkcontribs) 10:26, 10 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy Deletion and Tutoring

You deleted my article on TIAH Legion. I don't have ill will towards you, but I just want you to know that when you dont leave a reason on the respective users talk page concerning your motives seems cold and uncaring. I know you are not cold or uncaring and that you are only interested in keeping Wikipedia neat and tidy. I respect you for this.
That being said I would appreciate it if you would give me a few "pointers," if you will, on what is accepted on Wikipedia. You dont have to but, you could blacklist me and spam me, but if you do have any critical knowledge that you have acquired from your time with Wikipedia I would appreciate it if you would share such knowledge with me.

Respectfully,

Uploading image

A request, can you please upload this image of an earthquake. I want to use it for the article 1999 Chamoli earthquake. I am asking you because I am still not well-versed in uploading images outside Flickr. The image is present in this page. The image will be fair use. A Non-free historic image will be appropriate for use in the particular article. Otolemur crassicaudatus (talk) 07:36, 11 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

This guy left me a message. I have reason to believe that he is the GM minivan vandal. User talk:216.15.125.84. Karrmann (talk) 01:20, 12 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Why did you delete my tom? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Raz Forshizle (talkcontribs) 20:57, 13 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

As I am not an admin, there's nothing I can do about it, thus I simply reverted the message.

Doesn't give him an excuse for vandalism, nonetheless. I do not consider his posting on my talk page any form of 'attack', but I'm not involved. HalfShadow 20:47, 14 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, a sock? I thought the name looked a little strange. It's fine. I would have reverted the other message as well. I've replied on their page, but I suppose it's probably a moot point now. HalfShadow 21:00, 14 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thankyou for your time.— dαlusT@lk / Improve 18:59, 15 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Nevermind, found out a different method. I am now requesting full protection of my userpage.— dαlusT@lk / Improve 00:01, 16 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
