The K-152 Nerpa (Russian: К-152 «Нерпа») is a 9,140 tonne Project 971 Shchuka-B (NATO: "Akula I") type nuclear-powered attack submarine. Construction was started in 1991, but suspended due to lack of funding. K-152 Nerpa was launched by the Amur shipyard in October 2008.[2] 'Nerpa' is the Russian name of the animal which is called 'Baikal Seal' in English.

A 2008 accident while K-152 Nerpa was undergoing sea trials in the Sea of Japan reportedly caused the deaths of 20 sailors and injury to 21.[3]

2008 accident

An accident aboard K-152 Nerpa during a test run in the Pacific Ocean[4] on Saturday November 8, 2008, killed 20 people,[5] marking the worst submarine disaster since the Kursk sank in 2000.[6][7] The incident involved the failure of a freon fire extinguishing system,[8] which released the gas into the atmosphere, with at least 21 additional people injured as a result.[9] Freon is heavier than air and displaced all of the breathable oxygen in areas affected by the malfunction, effectively causing suffocation. There were 208 people on board at the time, 81 of whom were servicemen. Following the incident, the vessel was ordered to suspend sea trials and return to port in Primorsky Krai.[10][11][12][13]

The submarine belongs to the Pacific Fleet. Her construction started in 1991, but was delayed due to lack of funding.[14][15]

The accident was the country's worst since 2000, when torpedo explosions sank another Russian nuclear submarine, the Kursk, killing 118 people.[16]

Reaction

The Russian military under the order of President Dmitry Medvedev[17] has launched an investigation into the incident.[18] Among those killed are shipyard workers and military servicemen.[19][20] Twenty-one of those who were injured were promptly evacuated by an escort ship.[21] Reports say the incident occurred in the bow section of the vessel. The nuclear reactor, which is in the stern, was not affected[22] with any radiation leaks.[23][24][25]

Indian lease

As of 2008 Russia had an agreement pending with India worth US$2 billion for the lease of Nerpa and another Project 971 Shchuka-B class submarine.[2]

Other vessels named Nerpa

This is the second submarine to be commissioned with the name Nerpa. The first submarine Nerpa was a Morzh class submarine which was commissioned in 1915.[citation needed]
