Mohan Chopra (1921-1969), a Hindi litterateur

His Life

Late Mr. Mohan Chopra was born at Gurdaspur, in the Indian State of Punjab, on 10th Sept.,1921. He had his education at Dalhousie, Gurdaspur and Lahore. He did his M.A. in English and taught in colleges at Lahore, Ludhiana, Ferozepur and Hissar. He passed away on 11th December, 1969 due to cardiac arrest.

His works

Short stories

His first short story was published in 1953 in a magazine called 'Ranee' published from Calcutta. He wrote about a hundred short stories in his life. Most of the short stories were published in a magazine called 'Kahani' published from Allahabad, edited by Shripat Rai, son of Munshi Premchand. These short stories are now included in four collections of short stories titled 'Aadha Kata Hua Surya', 'Peele Patte, Sham Aur Akela Aadmi', 'Band Darwaza' and 'Intezaar Aur Terah Anya Kahaniyan'. A number of these short stories have been translated in other Indian languages also.

Novels

His first novel 'Bahein' was published in 1956. Thereafter, five other novels were published named 'Needh Se Aage', 'Ek Chhaya Aur Main', 'Subah Se Pahle', 'Ye Naye Log' and 'Tuta Hua Aadmi'. The novel 'Ek chhaya Aur Main' was translated in the Kannada language and was published under the name 'Bhranti Samar'.

Drama

In the field of drama, three of his works were published, namely, 'Samay Ke Swar', a collection of one-act plays, 'Chattan Ka Phool', a collection of radio plays, and 'Aandhi Aur Ghar', a full-length play. 'Aandhi Aur Ghar' was written on the lines of the Greek drama, keeping in view the unity of time, place and action. 'Vaadiyon Ke Raaste', a travelogue, was published in 1968.

Poetry

In the field of poetry, two of his books were published, 'Nai Subah Ke Charan' in 1968 and 'Coffee House Mein Mynah' in 2000.

A subject of Ph.D research

His works were the subject of extensive research in the Kurukshetra University. A Ph.D degree was awarded on the research work named 'Mohan Chopra Ka Vyaktitava Aur Krititava'.
