ACE for WTS 2008

The ACE from the JMA is from the Digital-typhoon site. It's a recent addition to the site. The ACE from the JTWC I calculated myself using the track-data from their running best track with Microsoft Excel using the formula, kt2/104. You can calculate the ACE yourself if you need to see if the ACE I calculated is correct. Since the JTWC ACE is not directly from an official source, I put the JMA as the official ACE. It makes sense anyways as the JMA is the official monitoring administration for the basin. Cyclonebiskit (talk) 03:36, 26 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Oh wow, that's cool. That'll be extremely helpful! Thanks for sharing it with me, and it is definately easier than Excel. Cyclonebiskit (talk) 03:49, 26 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Just a thought for people who use mac computers (and myself for when I'm away from home, as i have a mac laptop), can you make an online version of the calculator because it only works on Windows computers. If it's too much to do it's ok, just a though. Cyclonebiskit (talk) 15:43, 11 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Aloha

Ha! Waikiki was fantastic but Kalpana was better. I stayed in the Kalpana Villas right next to the Ritz Carlton. It was everything you dream about when you think "paradise." The Villas had a deal with the Ritz that gave us access to their huge, three-tiered pool and outdoor restaurant. We ate there one night and it was right out of a dream. The restaurant sat on a patio right on the beach. The sun had just gone down, torches surrounded the place, the weather was perfect and and you got to eat with just the ambiance of the crashing waves. It was one of the most incredible experiences of my life. -- HurricaneERIC - Class of '08: XVII Maius MMVIII 23:13, 30 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

not spam

Hi RattleMan,

the edits I made are not spam. Ambiental offer free downloads of active/inactive hurricane paths. Fromat is GoogleTM Earth KMZ. Neither is FlowrouteTM suite on the Flood page. Entire communities benefit from accurate flood modelling.

Bests

I've failed to find the free link on the site and all I can see is contact us and the site is commercial. Bidgee (talk) 07:51, 1 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I made it clearer on the page that the download is free. Pls look: http://www.ambiental.co.uk/hurricane-tracker.html —Preceding unsigned comment added by Bodaonline (talkcontribs) 08:24, 1 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned non-free media (Image:Matrix reboot.jpg)

Thanks for uploading Image:Matrix reboot.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 05:24, 3 July 2008 (UTC) [reply]

Re: HNSky

(My english is poor) Well, to download the World map supplement, here is the link (zip format). Let the new file in the same directory where is the HNSky software. Open HNSky and click in "Objects Menu". There, uncheck all the options, except one, the World Map sup. The generation of track maps using HNSky isn't automatic. What I did with the software is an improvisation. After all, HNSky is a planetarium, not a track map generator. -Ramisses (talk) 16:29, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Track maps

I'm doing them by hand in GIMP (any thing like photoshop would work, but GIMP is free). Basically, I made a circle, a square, and a triangle filled in with the colors of all 7 storms (TD, TS + 5 canes). As for placing the dots, I used excel and math.. Take this full size map Image:Whole world - land and oceans.jpg. Since we know that 180 (anti-meridian) is at the left edge, and that the image is 15,306 × 7,653. We know that the equator is at 3826.5px down and the prime meridian is at 7653px from the left. For the northern hemisphere, you use this equation where A is the latitude. 3826.5-(3826.5/(90/A)). For the western hemisphere, you use this where B is the longitude. =7653-(7653/(180/B)). If the spot is 12.1N, 55.6W. That gives you a location on the image of (3312,5289). (0,0 is the top left hand corner). I can't believe I got it to work. But it is very tedious to make, but it looks somewhat like the real ones. -CWY2190(talkcontributions) 03:45, 10 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It works. But I'll stick to excel because I can have a list of all the coordinates and I don't have to stop to enter new ones after each one. Much more efficient for me. I can't believe I got it to work personally since I'm not good with image editing. There is probably a better way to do it, but I don't know it. -CWY2190(talkcontributions) 04:20, 10 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I had problems loading it too. After I got it loaded cropped from 180 to about France, and from the top to about 5 degrees S or so. It works for about every EPac and Atl storm (except one like Flossie), and it is cut about 30% of full size. -CWY2190(talkcontributions) 04:33, 10 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Looks good to me. --CWY2190(talkcontributions) 05:44, 10 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Now I ask you: Do you use the same method Nilfanion and Jdorje do to generate the track maps? I'd really like to try my hand at those but I don't have the necessary items to run them. -Ramisses (talk) 16:07, 10 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It had been discussed here (Talk:2008 Pacific typhoon season/Archive 1) why we shouldn't include PAGASA's every upgrade and downgrade. If we include PAGASA, then why not every other agency? China, Hong Kong, South Korea, Taiwan and Thailand all upgrade and downgrade independently without coordinating with JMA or anybody. The reason we include PAGASA is because of the additional name it gives, i.e. when a LPA is upgraded to TD. If we include every action by PAGASA, then why not a storm upgraded and downgraded by or enters or leaves the AOR of HKO? HkCaGu (talk) 23:50, 14 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I still don't see the significance of a TC leaving PAGASA AOR. Entering AOR (already a TC) triggers a Philippine TC name, but leaving does little. Some countries don't use JMA names, some drop names when a TC goes from a TS to a TD, some continues to carry the name for a downgraded TD. PAGASA stops calling something by its name because it stops monitoring it, unlike first assigning a name, means little to the identification of a TC. HkCaGu (talk) 00:06, 15 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Kalmaegi

Are you sure it was still rated a typhoon when it made landfall in Ilan? Taiwan's CWB has been reporting that it is a tropical storm well before it made landfall. ludahai 魯大海 (talk) 05:07, 18 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

According to the Current Storm information, the JMA reported that it had dropped to tropical storm status by 12:00 GMT, which is more than an hour before it made landfall in Taiwan. ludahai 魯大海 (talk) 05:12, 18 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Understood, however, we have a problem then as the national weather service of the country affected regards it as a tropical storm on strike and most sources I have seen (both ENglish and Chinese) are calling it a tropical storm on landing. It seems some explanation will be in order. BTW, weather permitting, I am going to go out on my bike in the morning to try to get some pictures of local damage. Do you know if anyone is working on a separate article for the storm? I will send them links to relevant pictures if there is. Thanks. ludahai 魯大海 (talk) 12:10, 18 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Do you know who is working on the main article? I am uploading two pictures now. Persistent rains is preventing me from going out to get more at the present time. ludahai 魯大海 (talk) 10:33, 19 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. If there is no objection, I will post them to the 2008 Tropical Storms article for now with the understanding that they will be transferred to the specific article for the typhoon. Frankly, I have NEVER seen this much rain from a storm here in Taichung - regardless of whether a tropical storm or typhoon. It was insane here yesterday. ludahai 魯大海 (talk) 10:47, 19 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

TCRs and perception of lateness

I understand Jason's point. Most of the time, the TCRs do come out months after the fact. Usually a couple early season systems get theirs written quickly, then there's months of silence during the peak of the season. If Erin hadn't done what it did, its TCR would have probably come out in December instead of April. Thegreatdr (talk) 20:23, 30 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Disputed non-free use rationale for Image:Pupuran.JPG

Thank you for uploading Image:Pupuran.JPG. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this image on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the image description page and add or clarify the reason why the image qualifies under this policy. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for images used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator within a few days in accordance with our criteria for speedy deletion.
