Dev Patel (Hindi: देव पटेल, Gujarati: દેવ પટેલ)[1] (born 23 April 1990) is a Critics' Choice Award winning and BAFTA Award nominated British actor, known for his performances as Anwar Kharral in the teen drama series Skins and as Jamal Malik in Danny Boyle's 2008 film Slumdog Millionaire. He was also bronze medalist at the Taekwondo 2004 World Championship in Dublin.[2][3]

Dev Patel was born in Harrow, London, England, to Gujarati Indian Hindu parents, both of whom were born in Nairobi, Kenya.[4][5] His mother Anita Patel is a carer and his father Raj Patel an IT consultant.[4] Dev Patel attended Longfield Primary School and later went to Whitmore High School, receiving an A* in GCSE Drama, for his "self-penned portrayal of a child in the Beslan school siege." Boyle's 17-year-old daughter Caitlin pointed him to the British television ensemble drama Skins, of which Patel was a cast member.[14] After a successful audition, the actor was cast in August 2007.[11] To prepare for the role, he went along with Boyle while scouting for filming locations, where he was able to observe the Dharavi slums for himself.[15] He also reported having had a brief internship at a call centre and working in a hotel, where he spent a day washing dishes and generally observing life in Mumbai.

After the release of Slumdog Millionaire at the end of 2008, Patel went on to receive a number of awards for his performance, including the British Independent Film Award for "Most Promising Newcomer", the National Board of Review Award (NBR Award) for "Best Breakthrough Performance", the Black Reel Awards for "Best Actor" and "Best Breakthrough Performance", and the Chicago Film Critics Association Award for "Most Promising Performer". On 18 December 2008, it was announced that Patel was also nominated for "Best Supporting Actor" at the 2009 Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards. He has also been nominated for the 2009 London Critics Circle Film Award for "British Actor of the Year", the 2009 NAACP Image Award for "Outstanding Supporting Actor", and the 2009 BAFTA Award for "Best Leading Actor".[16] On 8 January 2009, Patel was honoured with the "Best Young Performer (Actor/Actress)" award at the Critics' Choice Awards for his role on Slumdog Millionaire.[17]
