Saw: The Ride is the name of a new custom Euro-Fighter roller coaster due to open in the Canada Creek area of Thorpe Park, a UK theme park, in spring 2009. It will be themed and based around the Saw horror film franchise. The roller coaster will be similar in style to Speed, located at Oakwood Theme Park and Mystery Mine at Dollywood. The codename 'Project Dylan' was used during construction, the real name and details of the ride being revealed on 13th October 2008. The ride is scheduled to open to the public on Saturday 14th March 2009, although people who win a competition held by Thorpe Park to ride it first will do so on the 13th March 2009.

The Ride

The ride itself is a Euro-Fighter ride made by Gerstlauer. There are currently two others in the UK: Speed at Oakwood Theme Park and Rage at Adventure Island. Part of Abbey Lake - one of the man-made lakes surrounding the park - has had to be filled in in order to accommodate the queue line and station. The ride will then pass the start of Loggers Leap and the Canada Creek Railway. The new island will be accessible from pathways next to Samurai and beneath Colossus' heartline rolls (using land previously occupied by part of that ride's queue line).

The indoor section at the beginning will include a steep drop and barrel roll; an estimated 30 seconds of ride time will be spent inside the station building. This section is followed by a vertical lift and the 'beyond vertical' 100 degree drop. At the bottom of this drop there will be a headchopper effect and cars will reach a speed of 55 Miles Per Hour. The track will include three inversions - the aforementioned barrel roll, an immelman Loop and a dive loop as well as an 'airtime' hill.

Theming

The ride is to be themed entirely around the "Saw" film series. It will be the only roller coaster in the world to be themed on a horror/torture movie. The original plans to theme it around a sawmill have not been scrapped completely; the sawmill is now being used as 'the home' of the Saw movie character - "Jigsaw". It was rumoured that the ride will be restricted to over 15 year olds only, due to the horror-style theming, but Thorpe Park has since confirmed that there is a "recommendation" that only children over 12 enter the ride.[1]

Disciples Of Jigsaw

As of 31st October 2008 the Disciples of Jigsaw competition is now open on the ride's official website. Participants have to prove that they are over the age of 12 by entering their date of birth. They can then procede to a Java-based game in which they have to 'cut off their leg' (reminiscent of a setpiece in the first Saw film). When done, they can enter their details for a chance to be one of the first to ride SAW: The Ride.
