The J. League 2009 season is the 17th season since the establishment of the J. League. The season started on March 7 and will end on December 5, 2009.
General
Promotion and Relegation
- At the end of the 2008 season, Template:Sanfrecce and Template:Montedio were promoted to J1
- At the end of the 2008 season, Template:Consadole and Template:Verdy were relegated to J2
- At the end of the 2008 season, Fagiano Okayama, Kataller Toyama and Tochigi S.C. were promoted from the JFL.
Changes in Competition Formats
- Fourth foreign slot (AFC slot) has been created to each club's roster.
- Division 2 (J2) has been expanded to 18 clubs.
- Promotion/Relegation Series had been eliminated to accommodate the 18-club J2; Division 2 club which finishes third place at the end of the season will receive automatic promotion to J1.
