You can call me Wade. If you're looking to use one of my images, please see this. // Archives

OK, Wade, now that I've finished that article (more or less) you might want to see about taking pictures of all the redlinked NRHP properties and the other buildings listed under significant contributing properties, save the Kenmore Hotel. The Coulson and Wing buildings would be especially important. Also, get one of that row being worked on at 136–40 State Street (or whatever it is) mentioned near the end of the history section. Daniel Case (talk) 02:48, 14 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It has recently come to my attention that 48 Hudson Avenue (currently a dilapidated shell of a building) may actually be the oldest house in Albany, at least the original parts of it may be a few years older than the Quackenbush House. Could you get a photo of it if you are downtown anytime? It is within the area where they are planning on building the new convention center, if they ever actually build it I'm afraid what may happen to the building. Even if they keep it and renovate it, it may be nice to have a photo of what it looked like now.Camelbinky (talk) 23:40, 21 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I answered your question on my talk page. I was also wondering if you could take a look at Kenmore Hotel, I just finished it up enough to put it from a sandbox to an article.Camelbinky (talk) 02:26, 22 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I just wanted to stop by and see if you ever solved the problem of getting 48 Hudson Ave to show up? Take your time on the photo if you have more pressing things to deal with. If I hear it is to be demolished you'll be the first one I tell! I unfortunately cant find any definitive info on the Patroon's birth/death, you'd think it would have been a big deal when he died! But right now I'm trying to nail down some definitive details on if 48 Hudson or the Quackenbush House is the oldest house in Albany. I'd like something better than "the Albany Historic Foundation says parts of 48 Hudson Ave may be older than the Quackenbush House" which even though the AHF is an authoritative source the wording is wishy-washy. Unfortunately with every source written since the Patroon's Manor House on North Pearl St. was moved to Massachusetts (in 1893) the Quackenbush House has been stated as being the oldest house in the city. So, its hard to contradict 100s of sources written over some 100 years or so.Camelbinky (talk) 21:33, 28 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I should be good on the location. I'm adding more sources to show the disagreement with both the birth year and death year for Van Rensselaer. It does strike me as odd that his death isn't better recorded. I have three years for both birth and death. That astonishes me. wadester16 21:37, 28 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Great job! If you and Daniel Case keep up at this pace there wont be anymore Capital District articles left to work on. I wouldve loved to have worked on that article it is an interesting topic and I hope you enjoyed working on it. I've started a sandbox for the Albany Lumber District at Wikipedia:WikiProject Capital District/lumbersandbox, it's still a work in process but if you dont mind taking a look at it and leave comments or add what you know or fix whatever you find I would appreciate whatever help you have time to do. I've got pretty much just a bunch of facts right now. I think it might merit a DYK once it's ready for being an article.Camelbinky (talk) 20:56, 18 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Just so you know, pretty much any new or expanded article warrants a DYK. Even the most boring of boring; it's the way of recognizing contributors for their efforts. wadester16 08:29, 19 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Ooooooooohhhhh, I had always thought that they were for interesting new tidbits in new articles. I've never actually tried to do a DYK before. Thanks for that info!Camelbinky (talk) 19:50, 19 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Image renames

Hi Wade. Time to put the Commons admin to work :-). Reckon you could have a look at renaming the files related to Wikipedia:Featured picture candidates/File:Bicycle transport of Hay.jpg per the discussion there? Thanks, --jjron (talk) 02:43, 23 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Sure I'll do that later tonight; I wish they'd give a "rename" button over there, though. wadester16 19:58, 23 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Ta. What do you mean by the button - is it tricky to do? --jjron (talk) 07:04, 24 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Download, reupload, copy+paste caption from the original to the new version, then delete the old version. It'd be nice if there was just a button that would allow for a rename, or even a tool like Commonshelper. wadester16 12:46, 24 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
That's crud, you're right. I assumed admins could just do a rename on the file - anyone can do it the other way, other than the deleting. --jjron (talk) 12:37, 30 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Copyright issue

File:AlbanyEngraving1686.png
This file might have a copyright problem, I'm thinking perhaps you had thought it was original to the era. It was drawn by Len Tantillo in the 1980s, which I assume he would then hold any copyright or potential copyright rights per here bottom of the page.Camelbinky (talk) 22:52, 26 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Bleh, you're right. Good catch. Wasn't very high-res anyway. wadester16 00:13, 27 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
You might want to go to Len's website, I think there is a contact email on there, you may want to contact him and see if he's willing to give permission for his work to be used here. He's given permission to several different educational and tourism organizational websites and events to use his work in the past, so maybe... I know there are ALOT of his works that I would love to use in different articles! I would contact him myself but I dont know all the different regulations concerning creative commons and if you have to give up ALL rights or what restrictions you can place, etc, blah blah, so I wouldnt know what to even ask from him.Camelbinky (talk) 01:05, 27 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I emailed him right after deleting the file, asking him for access to his images (even in low-res); so far no bites. People are unnecessarily scared: if you offer a taste of your work for free, people will come to you wanting to pay for quality versions. I tried to make that clear to him. wadester16 04:51, 30 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
If he does say yes that would be a great day for alot of articles. Not alot of artists are out there taking the time and energy needed to research and make their works historically accurate. I remember one article (TU probably) where he talked about all the research and the length of time it took him for just one particular painting he just did. Alot of our articles would benefit from his visual representations of what they looked like. I'm crossing my fingers!Camelbinky (talk) 05:15, 30 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm, no response yet. He probably just deleted the email after reading the first sentence ("Hi, I'm an editor over at Wikipedia..."). :( wadester16 20:01, 30 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Ethnicity

Hello Wade, first of all I would ask you to click this link- American ethnicity. Second, I would like to ask you to read the lede in the "Culture section" on the United States article. Third, I would ask you to read an argument I made on the discussion page. Race vs Ethnicity on the archives pg. 35. Yongbyong38 (talk) 17:00, 28 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It's an interesting concept, definitely. I've never filled out a census before, but I wonder how the question is worded when asking about ancestry. To me, American ancestry means Native American, or relation to the peoples of America prior to European discovery. Are people making mistakes in filling it out (or answering it in a way not intended by the Census Bureau) or is this a legitimate option for answering this question?
In reading the lead to the culture section, it does seem that race is a better word to use, though I don't say that because American ethnicity exists; I say that because America as a nation has no one race, and there is no "American race". North America may have (or better phrased, had) races, but once you put political boundaries on the map and consider only the United States, then no, we don't have a race. We do have at least some sort of ethnicity, though I'm not sure it's worth rewording the section just to include a link to that article. wadester16 17:28, 28 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Wade. Since tagging an image for SD takes a while for it to actually be deleted, I think it would be quicker if you delete for me. Here is a list (might expand a bit):

Thank you in advance. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 203.222.100.234 (talk) 12:46, 2 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Absolutely. Just make sure to read this (since it's a PowerPoint, there's no need to link to this site, but listing my username and the license is a must). Thanks for the heads up. wadester16 17:30, 2 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Could you please check my request for permission to use New Page Watcher? It's been a couple of days with no decision or comment. Irbisgreif (talk) 20:35, 2 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Great new (old) photo!

I really liked the photo of the Burden Iron Works waterwheel you put in. I was wondering if you ever thought of getting a photo of the mural of the waterwheel at the intersection of Morrison, Stowe, and whatever the name of the road that comes off the Menands Bridge is called? (NY 378, possibly called Burden Ave). I'll try to get the coordinates for you for where the waterwheel was originally, but it was on the Wynants Kill along Mill Street (US 4), there's a small parking lot and path down to the dam that (should) still be there. I think a photo of it might be nice for the article.Camelbinky (talk) 03:37, 3 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, and to make up for pointing out the Len Tantillo drawing as copyrighted I found an artist from the 1800s who drew similar streetscapes you might be interested in, being from the 1800s makes it copyright free right? Here's one site with his work that also shows what the same places look like today- http://www.bowserlab.org/education/edueightsart.html; he's also featured on the state museum website on the social history project of colonial albany.Camelbinky (talk) 03:50, 3 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I plan on getting a pick of the mural, but that's a work of art, and it's recent (they redid it since I was old enough to remember, due to graffiti and wear), so it's definitely copyrighted. Let me know where the wheel was, that would be helpful and I'll see if I can get some photos. Still haven't heard back from Len Tantillo yet, so I expect to never hear back. :-( That site is awesome though! The paintings are great, and all in the public domain. Upload them if you see a good reason to use them. Also, the Library of Congress has some great old photos (some of the Van Rensselaer articles now have images, thanks to the LOC). If you see images there you like, feel free to toss me the best and I'll do my best to restore them. wadester16 03:54, 3 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Possible vandalism

I noticed this while looking at my watchlist; do you think you could check the validity of it? Thank you, NW (Talk) 14:34, 4 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Resuming restoration work

Hello Wade. I'm resuming restoration work for the first time in 4 years since I lost Photoshop, but luckily I'm familiar with GIMP. Mind if I use your restoration template? :-) ZooFari 22:22, 4 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
