Type of formatAudio

"slotRadio" is a new type of music format delivered on a memory card (flash memory). Preloaded on microSD cards (starting at $39.99 MSRP U.S.), slotRadio gives consumers instant access to some of their favorite styles of music, including Rock, Country, Oldies and Hip Hop/R&B. Each card contains several hand-crafted playlists featuring songs from Billboard's top charting artists. Designed to be paired with the SanDisk Sansa slotRadio™ player, the plug-and-play music cards deliver instant access to digital music.

slotRadio cards will come preloaded with 500 or 1,000 Billboard curated songs in several different music categories and retails starting at $39.99 each. Currently, slotRadio cards are available in Rock, Country, R&B/Hip-Hop, Oldies, 80s and 90s, DailyMix and Health&Fitness themes.

SanDisk debuted the first slotRadio player and card at CES 2009. The slotRadio player is a device that is designed specifically to play slotRadio and slotMusic cards. It is a compact digital audio player with a built-in FM tuner and features a monochromatic display with metal construction which makes it ideal for active conditions such as the gym. While songs cannot be rewound or copied from the cards, users can easily navigate between the playlists and skip forward from song-to-song at the press of a button. The slotRadio player comes bundled with a microSD card that is pre-loaded with 1,000 songs, organized into seven genres including Rock, Country, Urban, Alternative, Chillout, Workout and Contemporary. The bundle retails for under $99.

Development

SanDisk, the inventor and world's largest supplier of flash storage cards and a global leader in flash memory, has forged an alliance with Billboard, Universal, Sony, BMG, Warner, EMI and others to produce a new music format to be distributed on SanDisk’s own cards. Beginning in October of 2008, SanDisk first introduced the idea of selling albums on microSD cards known as [slotMusic] cards from all of the major labels that are DRM free, contain all of the related lyrics, videos, pictures and media that coincide with the album, and are priced at the regular retail price point of your average CD. The cards are even rewritable and come with their own [USB] adaptor.

Cards/Media
- slotRadio cards: SanDisk slotRadio cards (starting at $39.99 MSRP, U.S. only) give consumers immediate access to some of their favorite styles of music, including Rock, Country, Oldies and Hip Hop/R&B. Most slotRadio cards contain 1,000 songs** featuring chart topping artists from the [Billboard] charts.

- slotMusic cards: Consumers can also insert a SanDisk slotMusic card into compatible player's microSD card slot to plug-and-play the latest albums from today's popular artists, as well as greatest hits' compilations from past decades (cards start at $14.99 MSRP, U.S. only). slotMusic cards make music portable and can also be used in mobile phones with a microSD card slot that can play MP3 files, computers with a microSD USB reader or an SD card adapter, and even some car stereos with a microSD USB reader or SD card adapter.

- Custom-loaded microSD cards: Consumers have the option of inserting a microSD card loaded with their own music library to listen to - up to 4,000 additional songs1 per 16GB card - which again adds interoperability with other devices, including mobile phones that are microSD card compatible.
