Greek Idol is the Greek version of the British television hit show Pop Idol. It is a talent contest to find a pop performer. It will be broadcast on Greek Alpha TV. The contest will be open to applicants from Cyprus as well. The show will premier sometime in March 2010.[1]
Background
Greek Idol replaces Super Idol, one series of the Idol show that was hosted by Themis Georgantas on Mega Channel. The winner in the series held in 2004 was Stavros Konstantinou. Due to low ratings Mega Channel had decided to cancel the show after the inaugural 2004 season.
Greek television station Alpha TV expressed desire to revive the show in a re-vamped version. It became official on December 15, 2009 when Alpha TV began airing the first promo announcing the show.[2] The name was also changed form Pop Idol to Greek Idol and the new designed logo launched. Shortly after on December 23, 2009, Alpha TV started airing a new promo announcing Nikos Karvelas as the head judge.[3] There will be a total of three judges.[4]
A number of Greek entertainers have been rumored as potential hosts of the show including Kalomoira, Nino, Natalia Germanou, Nikos Aliagas, Themis Georgantas, and Sakis Rouvas[1], who is the current host of X Factor Greece airing on ANT1. Some media outlets have reported that Nino did a Screen test for the show which was viewed positively by the network.[5]
