Urapar is a village in Shahid Bhagat Singh Nagar district, on the Nawanshahar-Phillaur road - 17 km from Nawanshahr and 17 km from Phillaur and 15 km from Banga. Urapar is also known as capital of the Saini saini's

History

Urapar is famous for Gurudwara Shahidganj which was build to commemorate the martyrs of 1711 battle, in which Banda Bahadur leading the Khalsa army fought a pitched battle with Shamas Khan's army and captured Rahon and the Sikh soldiers who got martyrdom were cremated here. Contact number of Gurudwara # 91-1823-248300.Late Sardar Sampuran Singh was the only Sarpanch, who had served 4 terms of Sarpanchi in a row.He was the First Sarpanch after freedom and he was a great cop ( thanedar )with great personality .There are 7 Gurudwaras, 3 Hindu temples and 3 Muslim places. There are more than 100 families of Urapar currently living in Toronto, Canada and every year they get together and celebrate Urapar day.

Demographics

As of 2001 India census, Urapar had a population of 4,251. Males constitute 52% of the population and females 48%. Urapar has more than an average literacy rate of 87%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 79%, and female literacy is 71%. In Nawanshahr, 12% of the population is under 9 years of age.

Weather

The village has a humid subtropical climate with cool winters and hot summers. Summers last from April To June and winters from November to February. Temperatures in summer vary from average highs of around 48 degrees Celsius( 118 degree Fahrenheit )to average lows of around 25 degrees Celsius ( 77°F ). Winter temperatures vary from highs of 19 degrees Celsius ( 66°F ) to lows of -5 degrees Celsius ( 23°F ).The climate is on the whole dry except during the brief south-west monsoon season during July-August. The average annual rainfall is about 70 cm.

Educational Institutions

Guru Nanak College for Girls is one of the biggest private colleges in the area. This college is run by the Committee of Gurudwara Shahidganj Sahib Urapar. Contact number # 91-1823-248300


Government High School Urapar is also for girls only and happens to be the best high school in the area. The results in board exams is always more then 95%. This school is also famous for its Hockey team, which was started by Mrs Surjit Kaur, D.P.E [ D.P ] and with the help of coaches Gagandeep Singh-Rinku, Guggi,Dhawa and Rubal( naa just kidding ) . Teams from this school have built several records in dist: Nawanshahr. Govt High School Urapar's hockey team is a district winner for seven years in a row and they are still moving on to built some more. All credit goes to Mrs Surjit Kaur, D.P.E, coaches, the players, and the rest of school staff as well. Contact number is # 91-1823-249157
