To animate the characters Boedigheimer will superimpose their voice-actor's eyes (or more accurately, one of their eyes duplicated) and mouth on the object they are playing. For instance, he uses his own eyes and mouth to play Orange and Pear (although Orange's mouth has a distinctive orange tint to it that Pear's mouth doesn't have) and will do the same for Justine Ezarik when Passion appears in episodes and for all the guests YouTubers that don't appear in any human form.

The Annoying Orange is a comedy web series created by Dane Boedigheimer, also known as "Daneboe". The first episode was uploaded on October 9, 2009. By June 2010, the Annoying Orange videos had amassed more than 380 million views on YouTube.[1][2] Originally, the episodes were uploaded to Boedigheimer's YouTube channel as well as to the channel and website attached to his company, Gagfilms. When the first Annoying Orange episode reached 11 million views from Daneboe's channel, he was inspired to make an Annoying Orange YouTube Channel. As of October 10, 2010, the channel is ranked as the 9th most subscribed channel of all, and 61st most viewed of all time. In total there are over one million subscribers to the YouTube channel, "realannoyingorange"[3][4]

Background

The character Orange first appeared in a Dane's main show, on March 16, 2007.

The show features a talking orange called Orange, played by Dane Boedigheimer. Boedigheimer's partner Spencer Grove writes the episodes. The Annoying Orange was originally posted on October 9, 2009.

Orange heckles other fruits, vegetables, or nearby animated objects, with puns and laughter. Orange lives on a kitchen counter, which he shares with his best friend Pear, a Bartlett pear, also played by Boedigheimer. Despite being his friend, Pear finds Orange just as annoying as everyone else he encounters. Other objects that live on the counter include Passion, a female passionfruit played by Justine Ezarik, a tiny apple known to everyone as Midget Apple (even though his real name is actually Little Apple), and a small marshmallow called Marshmallow. Most episodes consist of the Orange talking to other characters, who become annoyed and meet a gruesome end, usually by evisceration with a chef's knife (although their fates can be diverse, ranging from a blender to a toy pinwheel), which Orange tries to warn them about before it happens, by saying "Knife!"[1]

Orange has several distinctive mannerisms that make him annoying. He often starts by saying "Hey, (name of character)!" until they get frustrated enough to respond, and will often use a play on words mentioning the object's name or appearance (e.g., in the second episode, he calls a pumpkin "plumpkin" throughout the rest of the episode) He also has annoyed people by telling bad jokes, burping, and making noises with his tongue. Orange has a braying laugh that tends to grate on people as well as an annoying voice, and he often tells the objects he annoys "You're an apple!". In the latter case Orange's calling things "apples" serves a dual purpose, as he will also use the term as an insult toward someone he doesn't like or offended him (e.g. in the episode "Pain-Apple", where he told a pineapple "you really are an apple", and in the episode "Picture Contest" when he calls a disembodied voice an apple because there's no new video to upload).

The earliest episodes featured Boedigheimer play the fruit/vegetable Orange was annoying, but this has since changed to include at least one guest actor/YouTubers in every episode. These have included Bob Jennings, who played Grapefruit, Ginger and Liam the Leprechaun (which spun off into his own series - see below), Justine Ezarik (which led to her becoming a recurring cast member), Lucas Cruikshank, Take180's Evan Ferrante, and Weezer. Two crossovers were spawned as the result of guest spots. In July 2010 Boedigheimer guest-starred as Orange in "Fred Goes Grocery Shopping!", and Cruikshank returned the favor the next day by playing Fred Figglehorn in the Annoying Orange episode "Annoying Orange vs. FRED!!!". In August 2010 Ferrante appeared the leader of a race of broccoli aliens in the Annoying Orange episode "Close Encounters of the Annoying Kind" one day after Boedigheimer appeared in Ferrante's Take180 series "Not Tom Cruise" as Orange. Three of Weezer's members appeared as objects on a party platter in the episode "Wazzup 3: Bonsai Tree", with lead singer Rivers Cuomo appearing as the title object; the appearance was part of Weezer's promotion of their album Hurley, where they took to several YouTube channels (including Boedigheimer's and Cruikshank's) to promote the record.

In August 2010, the Annoying Orange gained its 1,000,000th YouTube subscriber. The series was rated the most viewed web series of February and March 2010 by Mashable, with over 52 million views in March.[5][6] On April 26, 2010, the series had over 108 million views on YouTube.[1][7][8]

Characters

Main characters

Orange

Orange has yellow teeth, blue eyes, and a braying laugh that is his main annoyance to people. Orange typically annoys his victims with bad jokes, burping, fart noises, puns, and plays on words. After annoying them, Orange usually infuriates his victim to a point where they start yelling at him to shut up, only to have Orange warn them of their impending doom, usually by evisceration with a chef's knife. Orange is the main character in in the whole series who is based around. Orange has been shown to be dim-witted, have the heart of a little kid, and actually very kind once he stops telling puns.

First appearance - October 9, 2009 (The Annoying Orange)
Voiced by: Dane Boedigheimer

Pear

Pear lives on the same kitchen counter as Orange. He is a pear with the same colored eyes as Orange and despite being friends with Orange he is also annoyed a lot by him. Pear started out wanting to die from being annoyed, but calmed down and became closer with Orange, as Orange has become a little socially smarter.

First appearance - October 9, 2009 (The Annoying Orange)

Passion Fruit

Passion Fruit, simply called Passion by her friends, is what her name implies. She lives on the same counter in the same kitchen, having been brought into the kitchen along with Grapefruit, who later got killed by knife. Orange has a crush on her. Although she eventually became friends with all involved, Passion is still turned off by insults and will scold Pear and Orange whenever they engage in them. She often will try to settle issues and stop her fiancee from being the most annoying thing in the world. She has the personality of a teenager.

First appearance - February 19, 2010 (Passion of the Fruit)
Voiced by Justine Ezarik

Little Apple

Little Apple is a tiny Red Delicious apple that somehow made his way into the kitchen. He is a friend of Orange, Pear, and Marshmallow, but hates being called "Midget Apple". He prefers the name "Little Apple", but everyone refuses to call him by that name. He is also friends with Marshmallow.

First appearance - August 06, 2010 (Crabapple)

Marshmallow

Marshmallow is a small, childlike marshmallow that Orange befriended after both were kidnapped by Jigsaw in Annoying Saw 2: The Annoying Death Trap. After succeeding in annoying Jigsaw, Marshmallow moved into the kitchen and shares counter space with Little Apple. He is cute, friendly, bubbly, has a high pitched voice, and loves unicorns, puppies, kittens, bunnies, and rainbows. He is also very slow to recognize danger.

Secondary characters

Knife

Originally simply appearing whenever Orange warned people of his appearance, Knife's actual character wasn't shown until the episode No More Mr. Knife Guy. Knife is a friendly, anxious and caring knife who hates his life because of what he is used for. His mortal enemy is a knife sharpener, because it hurts whenever he is sharpened. He is an anti-hero in the series, as although he kills people a lot, sometimes he kills people who are being jerks.

First overall appearance - October 9, 2009 (The Annoying Orange)
First appearance as a character - October 1, 2010 (No More Mr. Knife Guy)
Voiced by Kevin Nalty

Liam the Leprechaun

A leprechaun named Liam with a very bad temper who lost his pot of gold to Orange. Orange couldn't make up his mind with his wishes, and eventually Liam was crushed by his gold, although he teleported out of the way just in time. He returned later in the series to see who was more annoying: Fred Figglehorn or Orange. He was either disappeared or killed after being squashed by the debris of the building caused by Orange's and Fred's shrieking. He makes a third appearance in Annoying Orange Meets Charlie the Unicorn.

First appearance - March 12, 2010 (Luck o' the Irish)
Played by Bobjenz

Antagonists

Grapefruit

Grapefruit serves as an antagonist of the Annoying Orange Series. He is a fat, bad-tempered, foul-mouthed, but somehow seemingly fit grapefruit that tries to impress Passion Fruit by flexing. He called Orange a kumquat and swore when Orange called him 'Chubby McChubby Orange'. At the end of the episode, he was knifed, spread with sugar and scooped. In the "Grapefruit's Revenge" episode, it was revealed he had a huge family that was out to get revenge on Orange for his death. Grapefruit was turned into a Frankenstein-monster with a bunch of other "dead" foods from previous episodes in the second Halloween special of the Annoying Orange: "Frankenfruit," but again was defeated but by the Halloweenie. He had a cameo appearance in "Theme Song Attack!" by fighting Orange in a lightsaber duel with Pear on Orange's side. Peanut and Grapefruit battle of F.G.C.U. '11 from episodes "Duel Annoying Orange!!".

First appearance - February 19, 2010 (Passion of the Fruit).
