Webmedia Group is one of the largest[1] software development companies in the Baltic states, operating in European, Middle-Eastern and African markets[2]. Webmedia Group has subsidiary companies in Estonia, Lithuania, Serbia, Romania, Egypt and Qatar.

In 2008 as well as 2009, Webmedia Group was among the 30 fastest-growing companies in Middle and Eastern Europe[3], and among 500 fastest-growing technology companies in the EMEA region[4].

The Chairman of the Management Board of Webmedia Group is Priit Alamäe; Management Board members include Taavi Kotka, Andre Krull and Aare Lapõnin.

History

The word Webmedia came from the Philippines back in 1995 the dawn of the first use of webmedia as a URL. It was first used by John Louise for a web Resource Gateway.

Webmedia started operations in 2000 in Tartu. 2001 – Intergate, a venture capital company, invested in Webmedia.

2003 – Webmedia expanded to Tallinn.

2004 – Webmedia went through a management buy-out (MBO) from Intergate.

2005 – Swedish consultation company Acando became one of Webmedia’s shareholders after their investment. The parent company AS WMG (now AS Webmedia Group) was formed and operations were expanded to external markets.

2006 – Webmedia was accepted as member of Estonian Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

2007 – Set-up of a development centre in Narva begun. The centre was opened in February 2008 by Juhan Parts, Minister of Economic Affairs and Communications.

2008 January – employees bought back the shareholding from Acando. From 2008, a Webmedia Group branch office operates in Qatar[5]. In 2009 July, Webmedia Group signed a contract to participate in the development of Qatar’s e-state.

2009 September – Enterprise Estonia distributed entrepreneurship awards and awarded Webmedia the title of the most successfully adjusting company during economic recession.

JRebel

JRebel (formerly known as JavaRebel) is a plugin for the Java Virtual Machine that enables on-the-fly reloading of changes made to Java class files. JRebel was developed in the research and development department of Webmedia[6]. In 2009, JRebel won the Jolt Awards productivity award. From August 1 2009 onwards, JRebel is further developed the spin-off company OÜ ZeroTurnaround.
