Revision as of 08:18, 3 January 2012

This section is used to group holiday, anniversary, or otherwise special mottos that should be displayed on a specific day. Please keep in mind that Wikipedia is an international community, and that your event may not be celebrated in every part of the world. As such, it is very important that your motto remain neutral, so as to not offend anyone. Don't forget to specify the day your motto should appear on. But most of all, be creative! Try adding a motto about an event that not everyone knows about, or a motto that gives a common event an interesting twist.

Hello to the World

For November 21, 2012, known as Hello World Day. PS- This was the first ever Wikipedia edit. benzband (talk) 18:11, 2 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia that anyone can edit.

For January 13 15, 2012, Wikipedia's 11th birthday. --The Σ talkcontribs 03:17, 13 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  • Additional note: Dipankan001 sent me an image for Wikipedia's eleventh birthday ...
... I don't remember if it is possible to embed images within all of the MotD's templates ... but —IMHO— it would be really-really nice. –pjoef (talkcontribs) 14:46, 20 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support - Just in case anyone forgot. ;) — Mr. Stradivarius 14:41, 17 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose - Too boring. I think that we should pick something... More special, I suppose. ~~ Hi878 (Come shout at me!) 18:02, 20 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support ~ This is one of the mottos of Wikipedia, boring or not. If something better comes up I will change my opinion, of course. –pjoef (talkcontribs) 08:06, 18 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Considering that this motto is on every single page on Wikipedia anyways, I think that picking something different would be more appropriate and probably more appreciated by everyone who sees these. ~~ Hi878 (Come shout at me!) 20:31, 4 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • Supportpjoef (talkcontribs) 09:58, 20 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support - Yes, well at least until anything 'better' is found (this one's hard to beat). And pjoef, i struck you because you already have supported this ^__^ ~ benzband (talk) 10:50, 20 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment - Are we all really willing to just throw creativity out the window? I would like to think that people enjoy the fact that we come up with creative mottos, not just for holidays, but for every day. I would like to think that such enjoyment should be our goal. Does anyone really think that this "motto" would give anyone that enjoyment? It took no thought at all to come up with, and I think that anyone seeing it would find that rather obvious. Have our standards really lowered this much? ~~ Hi878 (Come shout at me!) 19:52, 21 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Well, if someone thinks up a more exciting one, I imagine that one will get supported instead... — Mr. Stradivarius 08:58, 22 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The fact that we are even willing to consider one as uncreative as this, regardless of whether or not we have an alternative, is unbelievable. I think no special motto for that day is better than one as bad as this. ~~ Hi878 (Come shout at me!) 19:10, 22 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

With mirth and laughter let old wrinkles come.

  • Support - YES! Thank you. I don't think you have any idea how upset I would have been if we had used the pathetic nomination above. ~~ Hi878 (Come shout at me!) 18:24, 31 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

In winter I get up at night
And dress by yellow candle-light.
In summer, quite the other way,
I have to go to bed by day.

For Summer/Winter Solstice 2012-06-20.

Robert Louis Stevenson (1850–1894), "BED IN SUMMER"

  • Support. I see the link is only a proposed guideline, but I still like it. Mr. Stradivarius 14:05, 10 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose - Absolutely not. A link that could be used for every single holiday that we can think of is rather idiotic to use, in my opinion. Don't we want something a bit more creative? ~~ Hi878 (Come shout at me!) 05:00, 11 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support - It's not applicable to every day; it's a specific reference to the solstice and the lengthening of days. I hadn't heard of this new proposal; it's a good awareness-raiser, I hope. Smaug123 (talk) 11:51, 30 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
    I am talking about the link. ~~ Hi878 (Come shout at me!) 00:04, 6 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Let Winter come! Let polar spirits sweep the darkening world, and tempest-troubled deep! Though boundless snows the withered heath deform, and the dim sun scarce wanders through the storm.
Then came the jolly Sommer, being dight in a thin silken cassock coloured greene, that was unlyned all, to be more light: and on his head a girlond well beseene.

For Summer/Winter (December) Solstice on 21 December 2012 (or Winter/Summer Solstice on 20 June 2012). –pjoef (talkcontribs) 09:08, 18 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  • Line 1 (Winter Solstice for the northern hemisphere): The Pleasures of Hope (1799) by Thomas Campbell (1777–1844)
  • Line 2 (Summer Solstice for the southern hemisphere): The Faerie Queene, Book VII: "Two Cantos of Mutabilitie", Canto VII, Stanza XXIX (1590) by Edmund Spenser (1552–1599)
  • Oppose - The first half sounds more negative, but your links are positive. In addition, you use FAR in a spot that looks like it should have a positive link. ~~ Hi878 (Come shout at me!) 01:58, 19 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

How bravely Autumn paints upon the sky. The gorgeous fame of Summer which is fled!
Spring has returned. The Earth is like a child that knows poems.

For September Equinox (Friday, 22 September 2012 14:49 GMT).

  • 1st line: Thomas Hood (1798–1845), Written in a Volume of Shakespeare (Autumn part for the northern hemisphere);
  • 2nd line: Rainer Maria Rilke (1875–1926) (Spring part for the southern hemisphere).

I know this is not the best set of links, but there is plenty of time to make improvements (if you like this idea, of course). –pjoef (talkcontribs) 08:20, 29 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  • Oppose - I love the idea, but I hate "Summer" and "Spring". However, as you said, we've got nothing but time, so I'm sure this can be made perfect. ~~ Hi878 (Come shout at me!) 01:06, 7 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose (for now) - I like the motto itself but the links are very weak, just link 'the sky' to Wikipedia is quite boring and I'm not sure what the Summer link is meant to be. WVRMadTalkGuestbook 16:52, 3 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

April fool!

For April Fool's Day. Kayau Odyssey HUCK FINN to the lighthouse 11:21, 8 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • Oppose this and all the April Fools mottoes listed. They're all pretty corny. I think we'd be better off just using a normal motto. Nutiketaiel (talk) 02:35, 29 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

    • Reply - Nothing's wrong with having fun on April Fool's Day. I like April Fool's Day. I just don't think these mottos are very good. If you guys insist on a special motto, I guess this first one is the least objectionable- it points users to the April Fool's Day page without trying and failing to be funny. OK, this motto has my Weak Support, and I still oppose the others below. Nutiketaiel (talk) 11:09, 30 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • Strongest possible oppose BORING!!! Hi878 (talk) 22:49, 3 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose - per Hi878, what's the point in linking a word to an article on exactly the same word? Other versions below are more fun. WVRMADTalk Guestbook 11:36, 30 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Reply the motto is april FOOL, while the project page is april FOOLS. Kayau Voting IS evil 02:24, 27 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I think the page is fine, I just hate the link; it is far too boring. ~~ Hi878 (Come yell at me!) 02:33, 27 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
