Summer Meltdown is the largest independent camping and music festival in the Pacific Northwest [1]. Nestled at the foot of majestic Whitehorse Mountain in the heart of the Cascade Mountains in Darrington, Washington, the festival is held each August and features over 30 bands on three stages over three days, the Green Village showcasing environmental and social outreach, food, craft and retail vendors, a Kids’ Area, Kids' Parade, the Little Seahorse Music Academy and more.
Summer Meltdown runs increasingly successful recycling and composting programs. In 2012, the festival aims to have a minimum of 75% of waste recycled; all food waste scraps from food vendors, volunteer kitchen, and event hospitality composted; and the festival requires food vendors to use compostable (or re-usable) dishes.
History
The Summer Meltdown was founded by Pacific Northwest band Flowmotion in 2000, as a community-based music festival on San Juan Island, with coordination and execution handled by members of Flowmotion and friends of the band. Flowmotion performed as the headliner of the festival.
In 2002, Lewis Anderson and Andrea Wood became key members of the coordination efforts, which included development of an official volunteer program, ticketing system, logistical planning, and county petitioning and permitting attempts. In consecutive years, they each took on more responsibilities, securing insurance, setting up vending program, providing web copy and coordinating media efforts, and handling site logistics. Flowmotion continued to perform as the headliner of the festival.
By 2005, the Meltdown had reached a critical growth stage and it was no longer possible to throw the event as a party, without official county permitting. The event had long since moved off San Juan Island and had occurred in three different venues in three different counties. Event coordinators agreed to take a hiatus that year and look to a future re-grouping in 2006.
Anderson and Wood founded Terra Roots[2] as a charitable arts not-for-profit aimed at developing and supporting community through arts, a mission they felt was the basis of their efforts in the Meltdown[3].
In 2006 the festival moved to its current location at the Whitehorse Mountain Amphitheater in Darrington, WA.
In 2011, Terra Roots has an active board of 9 members, all of whom play a large role in the planning and coordination of Meltdown.
Flowmotion continues to headline the festival each year, along with musicians from the Pacific Northwest and national acts.

"The 6th Annual Summer Meltdown has been postponed until next year. Though it makes us sad to skip a year of our favorite celebration with all of you, don't fear because we have great things in store for future meltdowns. We are continuing to move forward with the permit process and plan to be back in full force next year.
The Meltdown is growing fast, and cooperation from county officials, law enforcement and the surrounding community is very important to us . . . and crucial to the continuation of the event. We feel an increased obligation to bands and festival goers to have the festival location and appropriate permits secured before selling tickets. It would not be right to risk the inconvenience that a last minute cancellation would impose." [4]
