One single man has to try to induce attraction amongst thirty single women. Each woman has a white light which she can turn off if attraction is not induced by the man. The game starts when the single man descends the 'Love Lift' while his chosen song is played in the background. This is followed by a video from the single man's friends and family. In the third round, the single man attempts to show off an ability he has in order to induce attraction amongst the women. After these rounds, if there are more than two women left with their lights on, the single man must turn off the lights of those remaining until he is left with two. He must then ask a question to both women, after which he decides which one he would like to take part in a study, using individual cases, of whether attraction can be maintained. His aim is induce attraction in as many women as possible to keep their lights on so that he can then pick, from the women remaining, the one that he wishes to take part, with him in the study of the likelihood of the maintainance of attraction. If there is only one woman left, the man and woman will take part on this study.

If no lights are left on - what is referred to as a "blackout" - then the man must leave the show without taking part in the study, accompanied by the Celine Dion version of the hit Eric Carmen song "All by Myself". On the first series, the successful couples were taken on the attraction longevity study to Fernando's in Manchester, which is actually Club Bijou on Chapel Street, the outcome of which is shown as part of the following week's show. For the second series, the study takes place abroad on the Isle of Fernando's - Tenerife. For the third series, the study takes place in Cyprus. ^ For the first time in the show's history, Aaron and Wen's date from the Isle of Fernando's was not shown after it transpired in the press just days after the broadcast that Aaron was in fact a male escort, who at the time of appearing on the show, also had a girlfriend and had also received a criminal conviction for punching a woman. It also later transpired that Wen was also a prostitute for a short period - and thus, at the request of the pair, their date segment was cut from the programme.[4]

^^ For the first time in the show's history, two black-outs occured in one programme.

^^^ For the first time in the show's history, only 3 men were brought down the love lift instead of the usual 4.
