Social Point is a social gaming developer for web and mobile with headquarters in Barcelona, Spain. The company began creating free online games for Facebook in 2008 and is currently the 3rd largest game developer by MAU (monthly active users) on Facebook according to appstats.eu.[citation needed]

History

Social Point was founded by Andrés Bou and Horacio Martos in 2008.  Between 2008 and 2011 they launched some 25 online social games.  In January 2011 Social Point released Social Empires. The game reaches 1.2 million daily average users (DAU).[citation needed]  In July of 2012 Social Point announced it had closed a Series B round of venture capital funding in the amount of $10 million; the B.1 round from Idinvest, Nauta and BBVA, and the B.2 round from Greylock.[citation needed]

In November 2011 the company released Social Wars which reached 750 DAU inside four months of launch. In the same year a mobile test version of Social Empires was launched. In May 2012 Social Point released Dragon City for Facebook. Social Point’s most successful title to date, the game was rated 2nd best Facebook game of 2012.[citation needed]  The game targets mid-core players, allowing them to raise their own dragons and create a Dragon City on floating islands. Dragon City is currently the 4th largest game on Facebook with more than 30 million MAU.[citation needed]

Social Point announced an iOS version of Dragon City in March 2013. Initial figures showed that game amassed 1.3 million DAU within the first five months with more than six million downloads. It currently maintains a 4.5 star user rating in the Apple App Store.[citation needed]  An Android version of Dragon City is slated for release globally in autumn 2013. Amongst its projects for 2013/4 Social Point will officially release a new game, Monster Legends, for Facebook as well as a combat and strategy game.[citation needed]

Corporate Social Responsibility

In 2013 Social Point announced its partnership with the mSchools initiative, a multi-year, multi-faceted Education initiative led by the Mobile World Capital Barcelona. The initiative aims to tackle dropout rates and low attainment in Spanish schools, and help prepare school children for higher education and jobs in the digital sector.  Social Point involvement will touch the App Eductation Course element of the initiative:  a computer science elective offered in Catalan high schools to teach students about application design and prototype development. Social Point employees volunteer to mentor shoolchildren in areas like programming, business development, marketing and user acquisition.[citation needed] The company has also partnered with the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya to sponsor the 2013/4 edition of the Masters in Videogame Design and Creation. [citation needed]

Statistics

Social Point is currently the third largest game developer for Facebook, according to Appstats.[citation needed] It has an estimated 51,261,090 monthly active users and the highest proportion on male players in the social gaming sector.[citation needed]

In August 2013, Venturebeat published an article naming Social Point one of the 20 fastest growing mobile startups in the world.[1]
