Miuccia Prada Italian pronunciation: [ˌmjuʧːa ˈpɾaːda] (born Maria Bianchi;[4] 10 May 1949) is an Italian fashion designer (Prada, Miu Miu) and entrepreneur. She also has a Ph.D. in political science.[1]

Life and career

Prada is the youngest granddaughter of Mario Prada, founder of the eponymous company. According to: Forbes.com's the World's Richest People 2001: "She and her husband, Patrizio Bertelli, took over the family-owned luxury goods manufacturer in 1978. Since then, they've turned it into a fashion powerhouse, acquiring Jil Sander, Helmut Lang and shoemaker Church & Co." Prada is a collector of contemporary art and owns several artworks by Young British Artists (YBAs) including Damien Hirst. In 2002, she opened a contemporary art space, Fondazione Prada, which exhibits work by various international artists. Prada announced the winner of the 2010 Turner Prize.[5] She was listed as one of the fifty best-dressed over 50s by the Guardian in March 2013. [6]

Prada was born Maria Bianchi on May 10, 1949 in Milan, Italy; she took the name Miuccia Prada in the 1980s, after being adopted by a maiden aunt.[7] Her parents were Luigi Bianchi and his wife, the former Luisa Prada, and she has two elder siblings, Albert and Marina.[8] She attended in Milan the high school Liceo Classico Berchet. After graduating with a PhD in political science,[1] Miuccia attended Teatro Piccolo to study and perform as a mime for five years. She was known to be a member of the Communist party and a champion for women’s rights during the seventies in Milan. In 1978 she entered into her family’s business of manufacturing luxury leather bags, a company established by her grandfather in 1913. Around the same time Miuccia met her now husband and business partner, Patrizio Bertelli. In 1985, Miuccia had her first hit when she designed a line of black, finely woven nylon handbags that instantly became a hit. By 1989, Miuccia designed and introduced her first women’s ready-to-wear collection that was critically acclaimed; men’s wear followed in 1995. Miu Miu was introduced in 1992 as a less expensive women’s wear line that was inspired by Miuccia’s personal wardrobe and nickname. Miuccia was honored with the prestigious Council of Fashion Designers of America International Award in 1993. The following year she showed her collections in both New York’s and London’s fashion week, although she had already become a staple of Milan’s fashion week. Miuccia’s husband, Patrizio Bertelli, is still the predominant business force in the company who is responsible for the commercial side of products and Prada’s retail strategy. The design house has grown into an international conglomerate that added labels such as Fendi, Helmut Lang, Jil Sander, and Azzedine Alaia to its portfolio of brands. Miuccia Prada is known for her understated, minimalist, classic, cool, and comfortable luxury. The company has expanded into leather goods, shoes, fragrances, and apparel for both men and women. Prada currently has about 250 stores in 65 countries.

Awards

On 2 December 2013, Miuccia Prada was awarded the first International Designer of the Year at the 2013 British Fashion Awards at the London Coliseum.[9]

Social responsibility for women's rights

Despite her women's rights membership in the seventies, Miuccia Prada has been asked to respond on social responsibility in violating women's rights and human rights by global NGOs including the United Nations.

On August, 2010, Prada was reviewed on sexual harassment and gender discrimination case by UN Women CEDAW (Convention on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women).[10] On March 14, 2013, a counter report of Prada in violating women's rights was reported to Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights.[11][12]

Daily Finance by AOL released a testimony of Prada's CEO what Miuccia Prada's brand valued, "I didn't want to talk too much about body shapes, but Prada's customers, Prada's brand image, the dream and the value of the company that customers know, this is what convinces our customers to make purchases…"[13][14][15]

On May 17, 2013, a statement against sexual harassment and gender discrimination at workplace was released by the UN Committee.[16] [17][18] The UN has backed former Prada employee Rina Bovrisse over her sexual harassment and discrimination case of Prada. Vogue reported Bovrisse's statement, "Anyone who buys from the Prada and Miu Miu brands are supporting a culture of discrimination and power harassment."[19]

On April 30, 2013, Geneva Press Club launched Bovrisse’s press conference on live stream, "The First Case in The World's Fashion History". Bovrisse gave a speech on what Prada confirmed as Prada's brand policy: "A woman's body shape is also the equivalent of providing customer service" and "sexual harassment and discrimination of female employees is a required practice in order to uphold Prada's brand image". In the same press conference, Bovrisse shared a statement by one of many former female employees who were victims at Prada, "I felt the outrageous treatment of Prada ignoring human rights was unfair. There was rampant sexual harassment and power harassment on a regular basis, but the top management of Prada Group didn't care and I was angry by the fact that there was no concern for morality in their organization or management practices. Also, the way we were victimized was extremely selfish, it eliminated our identity and I gained the emotion of fear." Bovrisse commented, "Fashion is about dreams. Beauty always comes from within, and in fashion, a product is beautiful because it comes from a company that has an ethos that contributes to society."[20][21]

On August 7, 2013, Asian Transnational Corporation Monitoring Network launched Bovrisse's statement, "Worldwide, fashion is millions of young girl’s dreams and is a multi-billion dollar industry. Identifying fashion and beauty is a responsibility of fashion leaders and it should never tolerate discrimination and harassment to the consumer, employees, and society. There is no specific support system for the fashion industry on working conditions. There were no laws to protect discrimination and harassment in the workplace upon countries where multi-national enterprises conduct business—and this should be prohibited immediately."[22]

In April–August 2013, Change.org, an American certified online petition collected over 222,000 signatures worldwide in 5 languages.[23] A report detailing Rina’s case was accepted by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (CESCR) in advance of the CESCR’s 50th Session (April 29-May 17, 2013).[24][25] On May 17, 2013, CESCR released a report calling on Japan’s state party to introduce new regulations that would make sexual harassment in the workplace illegal. [26][27]

On May 28, 2013, Vogue launched a news story, "Prada Vs The UN". It was the highest number of Facebook liked news on Vogue. [28]

On June 7, 2013, 10 Hong Kong NGOs co-signed a "Statement for Press" which backed Bovrisse to support improve gender equality and empowering women around the world.[29]

Tax evasion

Miuccia Prada was investigated for tax evasion. Miuccia Prada, allegedly transferred the seat of the label to holding companies abroad, to avoid paying around £390million (€470million) to the Italian authorities. Prada SpA Chairman Miuccia Prada, Chief Executive Officer Patrizio Bertelli and accountant Marco Salomoni have been named in the probe, which is for possible undeclared or false tax claims.
