Badlapur (stylized as बदलाPUR) is a 2015 Indian crime drama film directed by Sriram Raghavan and produced by Dinesh Vijan and Sunil Lulla. The film stars Varun Dhawan and Nawazuddin Siddiqui in lead roles, with Huma Qureshi, Yami Gautam, Vinay Pathak, Divya Dutta and Radhika Apte in supporting roles.[3] The film was released on 20 February 2015.[4]. The film enjoyed critical and commercial success and was declared a commercial Hit in the India Box office.[5]

Plot

Misha (Yami Gautam) and her son Robin become the unfortunate victims of a bank robbery getaway during a shopping trip. Layak (Nawazuddin Siddiqui) and his friend Harman (Vinay Pathak) are on the run after robbing a bank and use Misha's car to flee. Robin falls out of the moving vehicle during the struggle, while Misha is shot by Layak. Both mother and son later succumb to their injuries in hospital. Harman jumps out of the car to protect the money while Layak is arrested.

Raghu (Varun Dhawan), shattered from the loss of both his wife and his son, immerses himself in seeking revenge from both culprits. Layak is sentenced to 20 years in prison but refuses to reveal the identity of his partner in crime. Raghu tries his best to get the name of Layak's partner who he believes killed his wife and child but fails. He hires a detective and learns about Jhimli (Huma Qureshi) a prostitiute who is Layak's girlfriend and visits her to enquire about the missing partner. However he gets angry at Jhimli's trust in Layak and ends up torturing and raping her. After Layak is sentenced to 20 years Raghu exiles himself to Badlapur, a chance station where he gets down from a train and attempts to commit suicide. But failing to die takes on a reclusive life in Badlapur.

15 years later, a cancer ridden and terminally ill Layak is paroled from prison on compassionate grounds. Unknown to Liak, Raghu has facilitated in the release as he has given a letter of pardon for Liak to the court, in lieu of knowing the elusive partner's name from Layak's mother. Bent on vengeance Raghu starts for Pune and finds Harman. Harman runs a well established restaurant now in Pune and in all purpose is a respected member of the society.

After his parole, Layak is kept under watch by police as they believe Layak will lead them to the unknown partner. Liak manages to contact Harman nevertheless and arranges to meet Harman and take his share of money. However Raghu has already met and interrogated Harman along with Harman's wife Kanchan (Radhika Apte). Harman pleads with Raghu not to reveal his name to the cops. He tells Raghu that while he was in the robbery it was Layak and not him who shot and killed his son and wife. However Raghu seems not convinced as he says Layak also keeps telling the same thing. Harman promises to give Raghu Layak's share of money. Raghu takes the money but kills both Harman and his Wife. Raghu meets Shobha (Divya Dutta), the NGO worker who was instrumental in arranging parole for Layak, to create alibi. He acts out to be in love with Shobha and sleeps with her. Later he returns and buries the bodies of Harman and Koko on a lonely hilltop.

Raghu then meets Layak as Layak waits for Harman and his share of money. He mocks Layak and says Layak's friend will never come to meet him and leaves. Layak is rattled and he desperately tries to contact Harman with no results. His frantic activities alert the police who now turn suspicious and start investigating Harman, who seems to have disappeared with his wife.

A despondent Layak gets to know from his mother that Raghu came to know Harman's name from her. Liak breaks into Raghu's house in search of the money and gets into a scuffle with Raghu. But Raghu soon overpowers Layak and beats him senseless. When Layak regains consciousness Raghu tells him in detail how he killed Harman and his wife and disposed of their bodies. He tells now Layak will never get the money he dreamt for and will die a rotten and hopeless death. Layak tells Raghu that it was him, Liak, and not Harman who killed Raghu's wife and child, but he did it in a moment of panic and not like Raghu who planned his murders with a cold-heart and without even knowing who is actually guilty or not. Layak tells Raghu that there is no difference between them and Raghu has become mad and should go for treatment.

Layak meets his former girlfriend Jhimli (Huma Qureshi) for one last time. He says he wanted to spend the last few months with Jhimli after he got the money but it is not to be so. Jhimli who is now a keep of a local businessman breaks down knowing Layak is now near death.

The police inspector investigating the case now has circumstantial evidences that Raghu has murdered Harman and his wife. He meets Raghu and offers a deal, the money which Raghu has got from Harman for removing the evidences. The inspector says Raghu has till Monday next to give up the cash or else he will be arrested.

Layak returns home in a distraught state knowing he has caused misery all around and possibly has caused his friend's death too. He finds his mother does not have a single good word to tell about his father and realizes that soon he will also be spoken of in the same manner by people, a complete nogooder without a single good deed to speak of.

Next day is Monday. As Raghu refuses the policeman and prepares for a final showdown, Layak walks into the police office and 'confesses' killing Harman and his wife and also reveals where to find the dead bodies. Layak takes Raghu's blame thus giving Raghu a second chance to live his life and also doing one good thing in his own life before dying.

After seven months, Layak dies due to cancer in jail. Jhimli meets Raghu and says you have a second chance now which Layak has gifted you. Very few get such chances, Layak never did. Do not waste this. She also asks Raghu now that your revenge is complete and all are dead, what good did it do to you? Raghu can say nothing and Jhimli leaves him standing in the rain.
