Alejandra Ávalos (born Alejandra Margarita Ávalos Rodríguez on October 17, 1968 in Mexico City, D.F., Mexico) is a Mexican recording artist, songwriter, actress, model, dancer and philanthropist.[4] Ávalos began her career in 1980[5] when she auditioned for La Voz del Heraldo, soon after, Ávalos was given a scholarship among 4000 aspirants to study at Centro de Capacitación Mexicana - Televisa.[6] Her first professional work came in 1983 as a model for a Television advertisement by The Coca-Cola Company´s Sidral Mundet.[7] After playing a number of leading roles on stage, Avalos's breakthrough came in 1986 with her first leading role in television for the highly-rated soap-opera El padre Gallo; at the time, media referred to Ávalos as "The New Young Super-Star".[8]

In 1987, Ávalos signed to Warner Music Group, a deal for five studio albums, one year later, her debut full-length recording Ser o No Ser is released; the first of three successful WEA releases. From the late 1980s to mid-1990s Ávalos became one of the most profitable female acts in LatinAmerica, during such period she achieved a large number of successful singles including "Como Puedes Saber", "Lo Que Pasó Pasó", "Aparentemente", "Tu Hombre Yo Niña", "Contigo o Sin Tí", "Ser o No Ser", "Casualidad", "Amor Sin Dueño","Tenías Que Ser Tú", "Tren, Tren, Tren" and "Amor Fasciname" among many others; her commercial and critical success was due in part to her collaboration with the recognized Spanish Eurovision winner and composer Juan Carlos Calderón; on the other hand, Ávalos has collaborated with many others recognized artists such as José José with the highly-successful duet "Te Quiero Así".

Ávalos's popularity was further enhanced by her portrayal of a emotionally-physically abused woman in the 1995 drama film "Perdóname Todo".[9][10]

Throughout her career, Ávalos has took part in several international singing competitions including the Organización de Televisión Iberoamericana Song Festival and Viña del Mar International Song Festival, finalist in both contests.[11]

Life and career

1968–1983: Early life and career beginnings

Avalos was born on October 17, 1968 in Mexico City as the youngest child of Carlos Mario Ávalos Solano an architect and Ninfa Margarita Rodríguez a housewife and model. Avalos had a catholic upbringing. She has an older brother – José Alberto Ávalos. In 1995, it was announced that she was pregnant with her first child. Her daughter, Valentina Benaglio Ávalos was born on July 19, 1996. Ávalos attended Universidad IberoAmericana, in where, she studied a Bachelor´s degree in communications.

During the late 1970s and early 1980s, Ávalos was involved in a number of competitions, but it was not until 1980 when she took part in a major event, La Voz del Heraldo, one of the most important musical contests in Mexico; although she was not officially registered, Ávalos took part in the competition, singing musical compositions by her childhood idol Juan Carlos Calderón, therefore she was disqualified; nevertheless due to her performance, she was recommended by the contest organizer; then she was given a scholarship to study for two years at Centro de Capacitación de los Iniciadores de la Televisión Mexicana.[6][12] Finally in 1983, she obtained an offer by The Coca-Cola Company´s Sidral Mundet to appear in a TV commercial; it became her first professional appearance on TV.

1984–1987: Theater and breakthrough

While Ávalos attended Universidad IberoAmericana, she was involved in the contest "Festival de la canción de la Ibero", Ávalos won all the qualifying rounds to reach the final stage, then, Ávalos won the first place unanimously. Subsequently, she was given another scholarship among 4000 aspirants to study at Centro de Capacitación Mexicana (Televisa); by the time, she met recognized actor and acting coach Sergio Jiménez, who was her teacher and eleven years later, her co-star in the drama film Perdóname Todo, Jiménez referred to Ávalos as "The most energetic and outstanding student".[13]

After some modeling work, Ávalos began appearing in several stage productions in 1984; first, portraying supporting roles or providing backing vocals in plays such as El Títere-Pinocchio by Chespirito or Fausto Musical, subsequently she portrayed the leading role of Mary Magdalene on Jesus Christ Superstar, first, she was the replacement; Ávalos also provided lead and backing vocals.[14][15] By 1985, Ávalos continued her work on stage and some appearances on TV.

In 1986, Ávalos was hired to portray the leading role of Janet Weiss (Chelo Derecho) on the successful stage production The Rocky Horror Show; held at Teatro Fru Fru, Mexico, DF; it was directed by Julissa. She also obtained the leading role in the stage play "Robin Hood".[16][17][18]

Soon after, during the summer of that year, Ávalos became part alongside Spanish tenor Plácido Domingo of the official album for the 1986 FIFA World Cup called Placido Domingo - A México... Bienvenidos - Viva México '86, providing backing vocals and lead vocals on the final theme "Arriba México".[19][20][21]

Finally, after working with several notable artists such as Silvia Pinal or Fernando Allende; in the fall of 1986, Televisa´s CEO Emilio Azcárraga Milmo hired Ávalos to play her first leading role on TV, in the highly-rated soap-opera "El padre Gallo", she portrayed both female and male characters; it was mostly filmed in Pueblo Mágico, Cuetzalan; according to official reports, since the telenovela, it became internationally known as a tourist attraction. At the time, media referred to Ávalos as "The New Young Super-Star.[22][8][23][24][25]

During the following year Ávalos made a number of appearances on TV and obtained the leading role of La Malinche (pivotal woman in the history of the Spanish conquest of the Americas) on the stage production "Malinche Opera - Una epopeya musical" alongside Manuel Landeta as Conquistador Hernán Cortés; The play was about the fall of the Aztec Empire.[26][7]

1987–1991: Rise to international prominence and musical success

After several years of modeling and acting work, Ávalos kept sending demo recordings to several record labels, but it was not until 1987, when Ávalos sent a demo to Hispavox CEO in Spain, Honorio Herrero (who previously worked for Luis Miguel´s breakout recording Palabra de Honor), when she obtained an offer to release her first full length album; Ávalos signed to Warner Music Group after a meeting in Spain between Herrero and René León, by then, the WEA executive chairman. After Ávalos closed the deal with Warner, she became one of the first latin acts to collaborate with a number of non spanish-speaking notable musicians including K.C. Porter, John Robinson, Steve Rucker or Paul Jackson Jr. among others.[27][28]

Finally, during the second half of 1987, Ávalos began recording "Ser o No Ser", her debut full length album, produced by Honorio Herrero under WEA; first, all the instrumental tracks and some vocals were recorded in London, soon after, additional vocals and arrangements were recorded in Miami, Florida. By 1988, "Ser o No Ser" was officially released, available in two different versions, the tracklisting was slightly different, the first one contained 10 tracks, entirely produced by Honorio Herrero, the second version omitted (in most copies) the track Cruel and included the Orchestal piece "Tenías que Ser Tú", for which Ávalos worked with classical musician and composer Pedro Plascencia Salinas, who died a few years later.[29][30]

Seven singles were taken from the album, which spent a year and a half on the airplay charts. The most notable songs were Ser o No Ser, a new wave track which became the first solo single in the Ávalos career, the power rock ballad Punto final, Tren Tren Tren, Numero 1 and Corazón al Viento; nevertheless, the best selling single taken from the LP was "Tu hombre, Yo Niña", which brought Ávalos wide recognition, therefore, at the request of Raúl Velasco, a music video was made for the song for a live broadcast show on Siempre en Domingo, at the time, the most popular in IberoAmerica.

By the time, Eurovision winner Juan Carlos Calderón was looking for a new "talented artist"; at the moment he was working with María Conchita Alonso and Herb Alpert; his first option was Ávalos, he wanted to meet her in person; finally, they had a meeting in early 1989, subsequently, both reached a contractual agreement.[31][32][6]

While Ávalos was on tour for "Ser o No Ser", and finishing recording her following album "Amor Fasciname" with Calderón, she took part for the first time in the most important music competition in IberoAmerica, the OTI International Music Festival in 1989; she competed with the song "Simple y Llanamente" written and composed specially for such Ávalos performance by Orchestra conductor Pedro Alberto Cárdenas, although she did not win, the event brought her international attention.[33][34][35]

In the fall of 1989, Ávalos finished recording the album "Amor Fasciname" in Madrid, Spain; it became her first collaboration with producer and Eurovision winner Juan Carlos Calderón; in December 1989, Ávalos released the first promo taken from the album, the title track "Amor Fasciname", a power ballad which was released physically in February, 1990; the LP had notable numbers after its release in the same month; meanwhile the album provided a number of successful singles, including the second one, the electronic rock/new wave track "Lo Que Pasó Pasó"; soon after, during the summer of the same year, Ávalos released the successful single "Contigo o Sin Tí", a power ballad for which, Ávalos recorded her first official promotional music video. Other notable singles taken from "Amor Fasciname" are "Casualidad", "Tres Veces No", "Amame" and "Dos Veces", the latter was originally written and recorded by Ávalos in 1982, but it was released eight years later.[36][37][6][38][39]
