Diego Luna Alexander (Spanish pronunciation: [ˈdjeɣo ˈluna aleksanˈdeɾ]; born 29 December 1979) is a Mexican actor, director and producer. After starring in a few telenovelas, he has appeared in many films, including Y tu mamá también, Milk, Rudo y Cursi and the Star Wars film Rogue One. He is one of the founders and owners of Canana Films.

Early life

Luna was born in Toluca and raised in Mexico City. His mother, Fiona Alexander, was a British costume designer, who worked in the film industry and made sure that it was a life in which he would be immersed.[1][2] She died in a car accident when Luna was two years old.[3] His father, Alejandro Luna, is an acclaimed theatre, film and opera set designer, who reinforced the importance of theatre and the arts in his life. Alejandro would bring Luna to the sets and mentor him in different aspects of art, cultivating a desire to become an actor and uphold the family tradition.[4]

Career

Luna at the 2007 Tribeca Film Festival.

After starring in telenovelas, Luna played the emotionally unstable lover in Gus Van Sant's biopic film Milk (2008). He and Gael Garcia Bernal own Canana Films, which jointly produce a number of television documentaries about the unsolved murders of three hundred women in the border city of Ciudad Juárez, along with Golden Phoenix Productions (owned by Tom Golden).[5] In 2012, Luna directed his first English-language biopic film Cesar Chávez, about the eponymous labor and owner of the United Farm Workers.[6] On 20 March 2015, he joined the cast for Ana Lily Amirpour's film The Bad Batch.[7] Luna became a member of the jury for the Un Certain Regard section of the Cannes Film Festival.[8]

Personal life

Luna married Camila Sodi on 5 February 2008. They were divorced in March 2013.[9] They have two children, including Jerónimo (born 12 August 2008)[10] and Fiona (born 1 July 2010) named after Luna's mother.[11] He has been dating Suki Waterhouse since 2015.[12] He and García Bernal co-founded Ambulante A.C., the organization and film festival working to bring documentary films to some recommended places.[13] The organization was awarded the prestigious Washington Office on Latin America Human Rights Award in 2011.[14] In January 2015, Luna appeared on the Board of Directors, and narrated the video about the barriers and children migrating from their home country face, after seeking refuge in the United States.[15][16]
