Dr Prem C Jain (January 1936- September 2018) was an Indian green visionary, [1]also known as the Father of Green Buildings in India.[2] Dr Jain served as the chairman of Indian Green Building Council (IGBC).[3][4] He was married to Renu Jain and is survived by his only daughter, Payal Jain.[5]

Early Life and Education:

Dr Prem C Jain did his BSC ME from IT BHU in 1952.[6] He studied further to receive a masters degree from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1970 and then a PhD in 1972 from the same institute. Post this, he obtained another PhD from University of Minnesota in 1967. After returning to the country, he was a visiting professor at IIT Kanpur.[7] During his tenure, he set up a separate laboratory for Environmental Engineering. Dr Jain was also a faculty at School of Planning and Architecture Delhi.[8][9]

Career:

Dr Jain, in 1980, founded Spectral Services Consultants Private Limited (now an AECOM company) with a vision to provide energy efficient Mechanical, Electrical & Plumbing (MEP) designs. Continuing his journey, Dr Jain founded and worked with numerous other organizations including:[4]

  • Cynergy System Design Inc (Co-founder and CEO)
  • Emeritus of Indian Society of Heating Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers - ISHRAE (Founder and President)[7]
  • National Building Code 2016 (Convener)
  • Emeritus of Aecom India (Chairman)[4]
  • India Chapter of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers (Founder)

Prem Jain Memorial Trust:

Dr Prem C Jain passed away on 20 September 2018 at an age of 82 in Delhi. A trust called Prem Jain Memorial Trust was found in the memory of Dr P C Jain. The trust organised a weeklong festival called Harit-Prem Bharat Mahotsav in January 2019 which aimed to boost the concept of sustainability and green buildings.[13][14]
