'''Winter trekking'''

Chadar trek is an exciting and adventurous trekking route of India, which is done only in winter because during this time snow is covered everywhere. Let me tell you that the sheet is called the 'ice layer' frozen on the river in the local language. In winter, a layer of snow starts to accumulate on the Zanskar River flowing here, which makes the trekking even more exciting.

'''Summer river rafting'''

Travellers also prefer to visit the Chadar trekking route, as they get the opportunity for snowy trekking in winter and river rafting in summer. During this time, the Zanskar River flows in its full velocity, seeing which the enthusiasts of the river adventure get excited. If you are also fond of adventure, then during summer you can enjoy it here.

'''A traditional route'''

The Zanskar River serves to connect Leh and Zanskar, so when this river freezes during the winter, a road to and from here emerges. With the help of which the locals travel from Leh to Zanskar. This river is still used as a traditional route.

'''A beautiful tourist destination'''

The increasing popularity of Chadar Trek in winter and summer has made it a famous tourist destination. This entire walking tracking route is about 105 km. Where a distance of 15 to 17 km is covered daily. This whole snowy journey between the mountains makes for a very exciting feeling. Here, along with adventure, natural beauty can also be enjoyed.

'''The right time to visit'''

The best time to visit the Chadar trek is January and February. Because during this time the temperature goes down, due to which the whole river starts to look like a glass, and the ice becomes very hard. If you want to enjoy the Chadar trek to the fullest, come here during this time. And of course do not forget to bring warm clothes and essential accessories.

'''How to reach Chadar Trek'''

The nearest airport to reach Zanskar is 'Leh', which is located at a distance of about 105 km. There are direct flights to Leh from Delhi, Jammu and Srinagar. From Leh, Zanskar can be reached via taxi. You can also reach Zanskar by rail route, the nearest railway station here is Jammu-Tawi, which is connected to the main cities of India.

Zanskar is tributary to Indus river

The Chadar Trek or the Zanskar Gorge is a winter trail in the Zanskar region of Ladakh, in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir. Traditionally the only means of travel in the area during the harsh winter months, the trail has become popular with international adventure tourists.

Trail

Its walls are near vertical cliffs up to 600 m high and the Zanskar River (a tributary of the Indus) is only 5 metres (16 ft) in places.[2][3]

The overall distance is approximately 105 kilometres (65 mi) – an average trekker walks 16 kilometres (10 mi) per day.[4]

The best time to do the Chadar trek is January to February,[5] when the temperature during the winters drops sometimes to -30 to -35 degrees[6][7][7]

Chadar trek starts from Chilling however with time the organisers tend to drive ahead to about 1 km away from the first camp at Tilad Sumdo (10,390 ft ). Over the next days the trek moves to higher camps till Nerak (11,150 ft) .This is the return point of the famous trek. There are other variations of the trek which go till Lingshed while a bigger version will take you to Padum over almost 14 days[8]

Modern road

A road is under construction to maintain year round connectivity between Leh and Zanskar and is expected to complete in couple of years.[when?] The locals have been demanding this road for a long time and will make their life a lot easier, specially to answer medical emergencies during winter. The road construction has disturbed the local wildlife, primarily the snow leopard. It used to be its prime territory for the snow leopards in the winter, but now they dwell up higher in the valley.[4][9]
