I started off by watching over the pages of BITS Pilani and all its campuses, adding new articles, and checking whether new edits meet Wikipedia's quality standard.
Recently, I have begun to improve articles on other Indian universities, and also some scientific articles where i have some expertise.
In particular, I started the following articles:
My goals as an editor of Wikipedia: (what will I do when they are fulfilled? Let them be fulfilled first!)
make sure that the pages on the numerous Indian Universities are not misused, and are used instead to portray a honest picture of them. I am hoping that wikipedia articles on Indian Universities reach a level that prospective engineering/science students can use to get some idea of the nature of what they are getting into when choosing a University to spend 4 precious years of their life (as undergraduates).
improve the articles on pure mathematics such that wikipedia becomes an effective resource to learn it, starting from the very basics. (This probably applies to all theoretical subjects; mathematics is what I am focusing on now.) I hope that anyone interested in pure math will not be scared away by the plethora of definitions/axioms/theorems; wikipedia is the best place to link all of this together and make the info available in easy to understand terms.
improve articles on the biographies of notable Indians: I hope that reading these, more of the younger generation in India (and perhaps other countries as well?) get inspired to do better in their life.
Useful Tips
A Collection of books that I found nice can be found here. Note that I have just begun work on this.
If you really want to know whether you have really learnt something, try writing a wiki article. It either helps straighten things out-or drive you completely nuts, both of which contribute to the process of learning.
If you study any of the mathematical sciences (usually math (duh), physics or CS ), you ought to learn abstract algebra (really!). It is the best place to get "easy" proofs to boost your confidence; the horrendous mathematics that you will see later in published papers (if you ever!) will seem like a piece of cake. Well...not really, but it will give you the confidence to make an attempt, at least.
If you are still in School: Before choosing which college you want to attend, be sure to visit the campus, and talk to the seniors! They will have the most honest opinion of the college. It is worth the effort; the next few years of your life are extremely important, and it is important that you have an idea of how you want to spend it. This advice is particularly addressed to Indian students.
