Frenemies is a collaborative podcast between Ethan Klein and Trisha Paytas, two YouTube personalities with a history of feuds between one another. The podcast began in September 2020 and commonly includes topics such as Paytas' relationship with Klein's brother-in-law, Moses Hacmon,[1] mental illness,[2] and discussions on current social media topics, including David Dobrik and the Vlog Squad,[3] and Paytas' past friendship with former YouTube star Shane Dawson.[4] The podcast also features occasional challenges such as the duo performing the Presidential Fitness Test, trivia games, and a cake baking competition.
Background
The podcast name comes from the fact that Paytas and Klein have an antagonistic relationship, with a number of feuds between the pair.[5] The podcast is primarily distributed on the YouTube channel H3 Podcast and is produced by Klein, his wife Hila, and the H3 Crew, consisting of A.B. Ayad, Dan Swerdlove, Ian Slater, and sound editor Zach Louis.
In March of 2021, the podcast featured a cook-off in Klein's home, guest judged by Canadian musician Mac DeMarco.
Controversy
The show has been controversial for its depiction of Paytas' mental illness. While Frenemies has received praise for its openness regarding the topic, which advocates suggest may help break down the stigma surrounding mental illness, others have argued that the podcast is exploitative. Some have accused the podcast of purposefully provoking Paytas into a mental breakdown for views and content, a claim that the podcast's creators deny.[2] Paytas has discussed blacking out in emotional rages, and has stormed out of the podcast on numerous occasions.[6]
Todd Grande, a professionally-licensed mental health counselor and YouTuber, has argued that the series is voyeuristic. Donna Yatz of Psych IRL (a YouTube channel which discusses mental health and psychology) said that while she views the podcast as exploitative, "Trisha has repeatedly said she wants to do the show. Why shouldn't she able to make this decision herself?" Drew Pinsky has appeared as a guest on the podcast, asking Paytas and Klein questions about their personal relationships and what led to Paytas' breakdowns on the show.[2]
