Many thanks for your contribution. Historically, all the series weekly results tables have been determined by team. Now you are suggesting to determine results by winning or losing. IMHO the table is a summary of the events that occurred. Looking at your new way of colouring confuses how you look at the table. I am sorry but I will revert your changes until there is a consensus about changing colours for ALL the series tables. If there is strong support for the change then by all means make the changes.

Hi, when you update the Flu pandemic page, can you please make it a habit to not link to Macedonia directly, but to [[Republic of Macedonia|Macedonia]] or [[Macedonia (country)|]]? "Macedonia" is a disambiguation page, not the country article. I've now corrected that link four times on this single page, but you keep changing it back. Fut.Perf. ☼ 17:17, 16 July 2009 (UTC)

Hi Mazewaxie, I made it myself in Excel using the data from the WHO situation reports.

2019–20 coronavirus pandemic cases (Data Corrections and Data Entry)

On 2019–20 coronavirus pandemic cases I have found some data mistakes. As I don't know your process (ie possibly you are maintaining a separate offline source file), I am giving you the info here.

I have written some parsers (shell scripts) that parse the first 2 columns from WHO situation reports and the Wikipedia table. I maybe able to help you with entering the data (or at least checking it).

Hi Wpliu, thank you for spotting these errors. I do check that the entries add up to the correct total, but I'm clearly sometimes getting individual entries the wrong way round. You're right that I am using a spreadsheet that I then copy over, so would overwrite your corrections if you made them - at least until the end of the half month. I can only do the first 2 columns. This is entirely technical.

When the table is copied from the pdf it doesn't copy over as a table as spaces are used for delimiting fields. The problem is that there are spaces in the data values and specifically some of the numbers. So I cannot differentiate whether a number has an embedded space or if it is two numbers in two different columns.

I am getting by because the country names don't have numbers, the numbers are only characters [0-9] (possibly with embedded spaces) and there are only 2 columns. My field separator is actually [non-number][space][number]. I am already manually fixing situations where multi-line country names are split across pages.

I am using Foxit Reader rather than Acrobat Reader because Acrobat Reader has completely unusable output (everything ends up in 1 column).

Found inconsistencies. If this is errata, then it should probably be footnoted.

I have changed it to US, it was happening because I replace the whole table each time. Not sure why US is preferable to USA?

And now seems that someone has edited all the other tables so it's "USA" everywhere except the newest table. Could you please used that now. Don't worry about it. I just thought you might need some help. Updating 200 numbers accurately every day is a substantial amount of work.

FYI, I might be able to give you the data part of the wiki table based on the existing table and appending the new numbers. The table needs to exist already though. This may not be a benefit to you since you are maintaining your own data files.

I have a question about the "Days to double".

I have not found this value in the situation reports. It appears that you are looking back for the day that had a World total less than half of the current day and counting the number of days in between.

I am not sure if this is the normal convention. As, this methods tells what was, rather than what will be. The doubling time (kind of the opposite of half life) is only useful in the early stage of the pandemic where exponential growth is occurring. Consequently, taking a local slope and extrapolating forward in time is probably more appropriate.

I think 'days since half' is a better label.

However, thinking more about this. Consider SARS 1. The current 'days since half' would be about 17 years. Not exactly a good metric indicative that the pandemic is over.

I don't know what the definition is for this value. Have you found a definition for this?

I should say, I don't like this value beyond the exponential stage. Pretty much all the 2nd wave countries are out of the exponential growth stage now. Any metrics that only uses a single value of the total number of cases are not that useful long term (differences are ok). If you want a better value for the doubling time, just wait. Wait 10 years then the doubling time will be 5 years (backwards difference, 10 years forward difference).

FYI. The best metric is daily increase per capita. That is what I plotted on my charts.

Hey, I'm a data dork who has been copying & using the data spreadsheets that you're creating on the COVID-19 pandemic cases and COVID-19 pandemic deaths pages. I noticed that there hadn't been any updates for a few days. Do you need help updating these? Maybe I could take some days off your plate? Hi, the dates are coming up as 2020-01-01 etc, and the numbers as zero FYI. In fact the WHO CSV works OK for me now so I don't think I need your parsing of it from now on. Thank you very much for doing it over the last few months though, it saved me a lot of time!

I saw that you've been working on keeping COVID-19_pandemic_cases up to date – you're amazing :) Not sure if you're aware, but the data from this page (and now the monthly pages) is being picked up by Google and shown in Google Search and their COVID stats tracker (i.e., this). If you're planning to create the new page for November daily stats, would you mind giving me a ping before you do so, so I can update the Google team to switch over to the current month's page and avoid any breakage/gap in reporting? There's also a mailing list that some folks from WikiProject COVID-19 and the Google team are monitoring (covid-19-statslists.wikimedia.org) – highly encourage you to join and post there, if you'd like :) You can subscribe here.

That table is enlightening. It clearly shows when any country peaked, slowed down, and started climbing up rapidly in deaths again.

Date of first death in United States

Hello! I wanted to let you know that the date of the first death in the United States listed at COVID-19 pandemic deaths is incorrect. The date is listed as 3 March but the actual first death was 6 February, according to these sources here, here, and here. Could you take a look at this? Thank you in advance! Thank you for your message. The page records deaths as reported to WHO, and the first death was indeed reported on 3 March. I think it is more useful if it uses a consistent source rather than any source, however reliable. Anguswalker (talk) 20:44, 12 January 2021 (UTC)

I think there should be a note explaining that this is old info as first reported by WHO in their daily situation reports. And that we are keeping that date as an historical record. Also, we should note that we are doing this because it would be way too time-consuming to vet updates for a couple hundred countries.

I am not wedded to this though, and if someone wants to do that vetting, then I am OK with that too. But from my experience with country lists it is much better for one's sanity to use only one source, and let them do the vetting.

It would be nice if WHO had a first death list that they continually updated. Or John Hopkins. Do either of those trusted sources have one yet?

In the meantime I added this note to the 2020 section:

COVID-19 pandemic deaths#2020

"First death" column is for first reported death by WHO in their daily situation reports, and is kept as an historical record. Earlier deaths, as they are found by others, will have to go in another article.

Where did you get day-to-day numbers of the number of COVID-19 cases for articles like COVID-19 pandemic cases in April 2021? (I have only found the weekly updates.) Your sources need to be added as references. Velayinosu (talk) 01:51, 24 July 2021 (UTC)
