The Apocalypse Guard is a planned young adult science fiction fantasy novel cowritten by American authors Brandon Sanderson and Dan Wells set in the same same universe as The Reckoners series beginning with Steelheart. Initially intended for release in 2018, the novel was scrapped in 2017 after Sanderson expressed frustration with the novel's writing process, its release slot replaced by Skyward.[1] In 2018, writing resumed after Wells joined the project, and it is still being written as of 2021.

Premise

In a world where humans across different universes developed superpowers, an organization of thousands of scientists, engineers, and extraordinary individuals who save planets work to save different versions of Earth which have been doomed to fall. Scouring the dimensions to find stable worlds, the Guard balances saving planets and evacuating them. Emma, the Guard's "coffee girl", witnesses a shadowy organization throw the Guard into chaos and finds herself stranded in alternate dimensions on a doomed planet. With the help of the Guard, she must find a way to escape the planet before its inevitable destruction.[2][3]

Development

Sanderson had outlined the project since 2015 and planned for it to be a trilogy taking place concurrently with the events of The Reckoners.[4] However, he scrapped it after finishing the novel, citing that he "just felt the book wasn’t right...even suggestions on what to do in revisions didn’t click with me" and scrapped the novel to work on Skyward, which would be released a year later.

In February 2018, Wells had announced himself as a co-writer for the series.[5]

It is tentatively set for release in 2023.[6]
