The Offspring's eighth studio album is currently scheduled to be released sometime in the spring or summer of 2007. It will be their first studio album in nearly four years since 2003's Splinter and also the very first to feature Atom Willard as the replacement of longtime drummer Ron Welty. As of now, there is no official title for the album.

History

Possibilities and delays

In 2004, while The Offspring was touring and promoting Splinter, they started working on ideas for a new album. "People think of greatest hits like, 'Oh, does that mean you're going into acting?'" frontman Dexter Holland says, he says referring to the compilation album that came out in 2005. "But I really want to put out another record next year. All the new songs feel pretty good."

On September 22, 2005, it was reported that a new Offspring album was to be released around October or November of that year, but then it would be delayed until the following year.

On February 15, 2006, Holland said in his journal that he went out of town to "meet with a guy who might produce" The Offspring's new album. "Last week I went out of town to meet with a guy who might produce our next record. I thought it went really well. Right now we‘re just kind of in that mode of figuring out what the next record is gonna be like, and writing songs. Why don‘t you guys write in and tell us what you think?"

On June 13, 2006, Holland stated that the band (minus Willard) has been meeting every week and would begin recording shortly. He also confirmed that Willard had not officially left the band and was only on tour with Angels and Airwaves.

On October 9, 2006, it was announced that the new album had been delayed (once again) until 2007 as the album would not be released by the end of the year.

Demoing the album

On February 7, 2006, Holland said in his journal that the band entered a demo studio to work on guitar tracks. "Well what's up this week? We went back in the demo studio last weekend, just Noodles and I, doing some guitar tracks. It was a blast. It feels good to get back in the studio and do some recording and just be a band, you know? I'm sure you do if you're in a band. We knocked off early because it was Noodles' birthday (remember?) and he had some ragin' to do. People are asking us about possibly doing some festivals in Europe this summer, which would be fun, but we thought it would be better to stay home and work on songs for another record. What do you think?"

On August 18, 2006, Holland updated the band's journal, saying that they had demoed 5 songs and are looking to go into the studio soon. He described the new songs as "lots of guitar, energy, lots of energy, and good songs." and "I think it's the best stuff we've done in a long time." Songs expected for next album include "Pass Me By", an outtake from Splinter and a re-recording of "Dirty Magic", a song from 1992's Ignition.

Current status

In September 2006, it was confirmed that the album is being produced by producer Bob Rock of Metallica fame. He said that he is working with Holland and "helping him sort out songs."

On November 16, 2006, it was announced on the band's official website that recording has officially begun on the new album, and that a world tour would follow.

On November 27, 2006, it was announced in Dexter's journal that the band had begun recording, and had entered the studio with 13 demos. It was also confirmed that the new album would have a release date within a month of spring 2007.

On December 5, 2006, it was announced in Dexter's journal that they are now working on eight guitar tracks for the new album and said that it currently has "no keyboards or samples or anything" all of them Holland suspects will be on the album.

On February 11, 2007, Dexter Holland Stated that the album will be called Singing For Sympathy and will be released on April 6 2007, But has not revealed the track listing.

There has been no official word on the track listing, but these songs (listed below) are expected to appear on this album:
