The Kapok Flag is the flag used by separatists of Guangdong.[1] In fact, the flag is hardly recognizable and is not used at all in Guangdong Province and other mainland provinces of China.[2]

Design and symbolism

The flag consists of three horizontal stripes and a stylized image of a Kapok flower in the center. Bombax ceiba is literally known as “cotton-tree flowers” in Cantonese. It is the official flower of Guangzhou, the capital of Guangdong Province. The use of flowers as national symbols is popular in the East Asia region (Japanese Chrysanthemum Flower, South Korean Rose of Sharon, Chinese plum blossom and Manchurian Orchidaceae).

History

The origin and authorship of the flag is uncertain, but has been around since around 2008 or even earlier.[3] The project appeared in the niche of Guangdong independence movement. The history of this flag takes place outside of China. The flag is slowly gaining popularity and recognition as a symbol of separatism and, at the same time, a cultural symbol.[citation needed] The flag is used by various groups, although all of them are very small.[4][5][6] As an icon of the Cantonese language, it competes with the flag of Hong Kong. Is used by one of the online Cantonese dictionaries.[7]
