On March 27, 2023, a school shooting occurred at The Covenant School, a Presbyterian private school in Nashville, Tennessee, United States.[1][2] Seven people were killed, including three children and three adults. The shooter, who was identified as a 28-year-old white female and a former student of the school, was killed by responding police officers.[3][4][5][6][7]

Background

The Covenant School is a Christian private school that educates students from Pre-K to the 6th Grade. It was founded in 2001 as a ministry of the Covenant Presbyterian Church and typically has around 200 students in attendance.[8]

Shooting

The shooting happened during the morning hours at around 10:13 a.m. CDT.[4][9] According to police, the shooter entered the school through a side door with two assault-style rifles and a handgun,[10][11] traversing through the second floor of the school before opening fire. When police arrived, they began to evacuate the first floor until they heard gunshots coming from the second floor.[12][13] They quickly moved to the second floor, seeing the shooter, who was still firing. The officers engaged her, then fatally shot her. By 10:27 a.m., the shooter was deceased.[14] Three children and three adults were killed in the attack.[15]

Immediate aftermath

A reunification center was created at the Woodmont Baptist Church by the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department, with surviving students arriving by school bus in the afternoon hours. The parents were asked to provide information regarding their children, while the children present were counted in a separate area and then reunited individually to their respective parents.[16]

Perpetrator

The shooter was initially identified as a female teenager, but was later identified as a 28-year-old white woman from Nashville.[13][17] Although full information on the suspect has not been released, it has been confirmed that she attended the school at an early age.[18]

Reactions

President Joe Biden spoke about the shooting at a press conference, calling it "sick," and urged Congress to take further action on gun safety legislation.[8] In a separate statement, First Lady Jill Biden said, “I am truly without words. Our children deserve better."[19]

Mayor John Cooper issued a statement in which he highlighted the long history of school shootings and offered his condolences to those affected.[13] Several notable Nashville musicians such as Mickey Guyton, Margo Price, and Sheryl Crow responded to the shooting, offering their condolences and anger about the continuation of school shootings.[20]
