Queendom Puzzle (Korean: 퀸덤 퍼즐) is a 2023 South Korean reality competition show created by Mnet. It will begin premiering on Mnet on June 13, 2023, Every Tuesday at 10PM KST[1].
It is known as a spin-off series of Queendom, but does not relate to the concepts of the previous seasons, only taking the name of the series.[2]
Concept and format
On January 26, 2023, it was announced that the Queendom series would have a third season, but would be different from the previous two seasons.[2]
The show will focus on forming a powerful global project girl group by taking members from currently promoting girl groups as well as solo female artists and putting them together like a puzzle. It will take on a completely new format from the pre-existing "Queendom" series, with individual competitions taking place rather than team ones.[3]
Out of the initial 28 contestants, they will compete with performances to finally become a supergroup of seven members of a project girl group.[4]
Promotion and broadcast
On April 10, 2023, Mnet released the first teaser video on their YouTube channel. In the teaser, iconic girl group songs play in the background as the silhouettes of seven female celebrities are shown. Along with the confirmation that the first lineup will be revealed in May, the teaser includes the mysterious code on the bottom, "IURP WZHQWB HLJKW WR VHYHQ", which deciphers to "From twenty-eight to seven".[5]
On April 24, Mnet confirmed that Girls' Generation's Taeyeon will return to host as the MC of the spin-off series.[6] The first six of contestants were also revealed,[7] as well as Weeekly,[8] and H1-KEY where its agency, GLG, confirming two of their members' participation in the show.[9]
On April 25, it was revealed that WJSN's Yeoreum will be a contestant in the show.[10] On April 26, it was revealed that members Jiwon, Chaerin and Bora from Cherry Bullet will participate in the show.[11] On April 27, it was revealed that Yuki from Purple Kiss will also be a contestant.[12]
On May 2, the remaining current member from AOA, Chanmi, was revealed as a contestant in the show.[13]
On May 9, Mnet released a second teaser to officially announce the program’s premiere date of June 13th at 10PM KST.[1] In the teaser, silhouettes of the cast members are revealed as MC Taeyeon stands in the center. Nearing the end of the teaser, Taeyeon remarks, "Putting together the best combination for a girl group, 'Queendom Puzzle'."[14]
On May 18, Mnet released teaser photos of the first thirteen contestants in silhouettes, as well as two teams created, PICK on the top & PICK-CAT. The two teams also released the two theme song tracks titled "Charismatic" & "SNAP" respectively on the same day, accompanied by two performance videos shown on M Countdown.[15] It was also shared that the rest of the contestants will be revealed the week after and will be releasing and performing the same two songs on M Countdown in their own versions.[16] On the same day, Lee Chae-yeon and Haein have also been reported that they withdrew from the show. They will not be replaced and the show will continue with 26 contestants.[17] On May 19, Mnet released individual teaser videos and posters previewing the first lineup consisting of the 13 contestants.[18]
On May 25, Mnet released a second set of teaser photos of the remaining thirteen contestants in silhouettes, as well as the two teams, DROP The Beat & Athena. The two teams also released different versions of the two theme song tracks on the same day, accompanied by performance videos shown on M Countdown. On May 26, Mnet released individual teaser videos and posters for the remaining contestants.
On May 29, Mnet released a group poster containing all contestants and MC Taeyeon, as well as contestants' profiles for the twenty-six contestants were released on the same day.
On June 1, it was announced that a special stage on M Countdown will be taking place in the following week (June 8). On June 2, Mnet release the first teaser trailer.
On June 6, a behind the scenes video were released, showing the contestants meeting each other for the first time. An exclusive preview was also released, also known as Episode 0, showing the first hour of the full episode to be aired in the following week.

Round 1: Up Down Battle
For Round 1, the 28 contestants are split into four tiers, based on the following criteria (as at April 24, 2023; based on data from Circle Chart):
- Number of times the contestant has won first places in music shows (50%)
- Largest number of first week orders among all physical albums released (50%)
The two scores are added up and each contestant would be placed in Tiers 1 to 4.
Tier | Contestants |
---|---|
1 | JooE, Lee Chae-yeon, Yeoreum, Dohwa, Kei |
2 | Jihan, Zoa, Park So-eun, Lee Soo-jin, Yeeun, Haein, Yuki |
3 | Yoon Seo-yeon, Lee Ji-woo, Yeonhee, Suyun, Juri, Chaerin, Bora, Jiwon |
4 | Elly, Sangah, Miru, Fye, Riina, Hwiseo, Nana, Wooyeon |
Each contestant will then have a solo performance, and the remaining 27 contestants will each vote for the contestant. The voters would press "Up" if they each think the performing contestant is said to perform better than the voter, and if otherwise the voters would press "Down".
