Lady Ballers is a 2023 comedy film starring, directed and co-written by Jeremy Boreing, co-CEO of conservative media company The Daily Wire.[1] It also stars Daniel Considine, Jake Crain, David Cone, Blain Crain, and Tyler Fischer. Boreing plays a down-on-his-luck-coach who will do anything to win, even bring his old male basketball team together to compete in women's sports.[2]

The movie has cameos from Daily Wire contributors and other prominent right-wing figures. Senator Ted Cruz and former competitive swimmer Riley Gaines both made cameo appearances as themselves. [3] Daily Wire's Ben Shapiro, Matt Walsh, Candace Owens, Michael Knowles, Andrew Klavan, Brett Cooper, and Jordan Peterson all make appearances.[4]

Plot

Coach Rob was once a great high school basketball coach, winning three straight state championships. He had a lovely wife, a successful career, and a team that looked up to him. However, lately he is not faring so well. He has been divorced from his wife, who has a hippie new boyfriend. He has been teaching a gym class where he isn't respected and can't utilize his coaching skills. Furthermore, as he says, 'the world has changed' and the school doesn't want someone who tries to push kids to their potential. Thus, he is out of work and looking for a job. He winds up in a drag bar where he meets his former star point guard, Alex. They plan on having Alex competing in a local track and field competition, where he accidentally gets placed in the women's races and wins all of them. The antagonist, a reporter named Gwen, for selfish reasons, hijacks this situation, promoting trans-women in women's sports. Coach Rob and Alex then plot to get the state championship team back together and compete against women.[5]

Reception

John Serba of Decider.com (a New York Post affiliated website) was reminded of the film Juwanna Mann and says, "Lady Baller's is funny on occasion, but only unintentionally". He concludes it "isn't offensive as much as it's just depressing."[7] Film critic Christian Toto (and past Daily Wire contributor) praises it for "smart gags, impeccable timing and an 'amateur' cast that gets the job done" commending Boreing for "maintaining a consistent tone and quality" but acknowledges that the film is not for progressives, who won't appreciate it or find the satirical targets appropriate.[8] Andrew Stiles of the Washington Free Beacon gives it a mostly positive review, declaring that "Hilarity ensues, for the most part. Though probably not destined to become a comedy classic, Lady Ballers is a welcome alternative to any of the Hollywood-approved 'comedy' offerings of late." [9]

American conservative newspaper, The Washington Times responded with reporting saying, "...pundits at the Daily Wire predicted that their first feature-length comedy, 'Lady Ballers,' would trigger the left, and they weren’t wrong."[10]

Audience Reception

The film has garnered a 94% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes with over 2,500 reviews and the top streaming movie in the country.[11][12]
