Satyen Sangani (born 1975) is a businessman and technologist who focuses on helping people observe and improve the world around them.[1] Sangani co-founded Alation, and is the company’s chief executive officer.[1]
Early life and education
Sangani was born in San Francisco and earned a degree in economics from Columbia University in 1997. He worked as an analyst for Morgan Stanley & Co., among others, focusing on mergers, acquisitions and restructurings, venture investments, and leveraged buyouts.
Career
After several years in the financial industry, Sangani transitioned to the technology industry and earned a Master of Science degree in economics for development from the University of Oxford in 2002.[2][3]
After graduating from Oxford, Sangani joined Oracle Corporation as a product manager, eventually rising to the position of Vice President, FS Analytical Applications after more than 9 years with the company.[4]
In July 2012, Sangani, along with Aaron Kalb, founded Alation "to connect people with questions to people with answers."[5] The company’s technology platform combined machine learning with human curation to create what is commonly accepted as the first modern data catalog. Datanami says the company created "industry-first data catalog software"[6] and writes that Alation "helped define the modern data catalog space."[7] EnterpriseAI calls Alation "the original creator of the data catalog and progenitor of the product category." [8]
Sangani has been Alation’s CEO since the company's inception.
In January 2022, Sangani with Alation launched the Data Radicals podcast series.[9] The show features Sangani in conversation with thought leaders in data and technology and has hosted guests that include former US general Stanley McChrystal; Turing award-winner Michael Stonebraker; Apache Spark creator Matei Zaharia; science integrity expert Dr. Elisabeth Bik; authors Tim Harford, Scott Hartley, Christie Aschwanden, Paul Leonardi, Seth Stephens-Davidowitz, Dr. Margaret Heffernan, and David Epstein; and journalists from The Economist, The Information, and Business Insider.
Awards and honors
Sangani was named to the DataIQ 100 Most Influential People In Data 2022[10] and one of the Most Exceptional Entrepreneurs of 2022 by Goldman Sachs[11].
