Singapore Airlines Flight 321 was a regularly-scheduled flight from London Heathrow Airport to Singapore Changi Airport. On 21 May 2024, a Boeing 777-300ER operating the flight encountered severe turbulence over Thailand that caused one fatality and 30 injuries.[1][2][3] The aircraft made an emergency landing at Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok at approximately 15:45 local time (08:45 UTC).[4] ADS-B data from the aircraft show the aircraft began its emergency descent into Bangkok over the Gulf of Martaban at approximately 08:07 UTC.[4]

The aircraft was reported to be carrying 211 passengers and 18 crew members.[5]

Aircraft

The plane involved was a 16-year-old Boeing 777-300ER registered as 9V-SWM, featuring a Star Alliance special livery,[6] with manufacturer serial number 34578 and line number 701.[7] The aircraft was delivered to Singapore Airlines in 2008.[7]

Incident

The Boeing 777 encountered severe turbulence over the Andaman Sea near Thailand, around 210 nautical miles from Bangkok. When the plane encountered the turbulence, passengers and objects were thrown into the air. Images show the oxygen masks were deployed.[3] A passenger who violently hit the ceiling died and 32 others were injured, with seven left in a critical condition.[3][8] The fatality was confirmed to be a British man aged 73 years who was suffering from a heart condition and likely died from a myocardial infarction.[3][8] An overhead locker in the cabin was damaged upon being hit by the passenger.[3] The flight was diverted to Bangkok, where it made an emergency landing.[9][10][11]
