MS Sovereign of the Seas is one of three large cruise ships of the Sovereign class operated by Royal Caribbean International. At the time of her maiden voyage on January 16, 1988, she was the largest cruise ship in the world at 73,192 gross tons. She was initially based at the Port of Miami. She is the flagship of RCI'sSovereign family of cruise ships, including the Monarch of the Seas and the Majesty of the Seas. Her godmother is Rosalyn Carter.
In 2006 Sovereign of the Seas sails three- and four-night cruises to the Bahamas out of Port Canaveral, Florida. These cruises visit Coco Cay, one of RCI's privately-owned islands, in the Berry Islands group. She was last refurbished in 2006.
