The universe of the anime and manga series Naruto is a home to a wide array of fictional characters. Names of Naruto characters are in Western order, with the given name before the family name. The English manga uses the Japanese naming order, while the English anime orders the names in the Western order, with the given name before the family name.

Names of many characters in Naruto are puns, literary and historical references and the like. The characters themselves often borrow a bit from the story behind the name.

Miscellaneous Characters

Hanzo

Hanzo (半蔵, Hanzō) is the former leader of Amegakure whose abilities are renowned and recognized by ninja everywhere. He seems to ride atop a giant salamander in battle, giving him the nickname "Salamander Hanzo" (山椒魚の半蔵, Sanshōuo no Hanzō). He is easily distinguished by his unique breathing apparatus covering his face, complete with the Hidden Rain's symbol on it, and his black sclera (much like Kakuzu). At some point in time he fought with Jiraiya, Orochimaru, and Tsunade. When they proved able to survive his attacks he spared their lives and rewarded their skills by giving them the title of the "Legendary Three Ninja" (伝説の三忍, Densetsu no Sannin) to indicate that they were the strongest ninja in Konoha. Despite his immense power, Hanzo was very cautious when it came to his own security, and as such getting a chance to see him was a great feat. Sometime later, Hanzo, as well as his friends, family, and affiliates, were killed by Pein, bringing an end to the village's civil war.

Kaiza

Kaiza (カイザ) was a fisherman who came to the Land of Waves in his travels, and ended up staying after meeting Inari. He eventually became a father figure to Inari after saving him from drowning, and taught him the principles of being a man. He became close to Tsunami, as well, and was accepted into the city. After helping to prevent a major flood, he even became known as the hero of the city. Accused of being a terrorist against the Gato Corporation, he was executed publicly by Gato's men and under his orders. With the death of Kaiza, the source of the city's bravery died, too, effectively crushing the spirits of nearly all its inhabitants, particularly Inari's. It is not until Tazuna begins building the bridge that people begin regaining their courage.

Kushina Uzumaki

Kushina Uzumaki (うずまきクシナ, Uzumaki Kushina) is a ninja of the former Land of the Whirlpool. "Kushina" translates literally as "nine goods". She had a son, Naruto Uzumaki, with the Hokage of the time, Minato Namikaze. She is noted to have had a brash, tomboyish demeanor at a young age, noticeably red hair, and as time passed, blossomed into a very beautiful woman. Despite Naruto's close resemblance to his father, much of his personality and choice of ninjutsu are similar to that of his mother's. She is presumed to be dead, as she is described in past tense.[1]

Moya Brothers

Three ninja brothers from Kemurigakure. They have a hatred for Kakashi Hatake, who had ruined their eldest brother's plan to force a woman to marry him three years prior to when they first appear in the series. Their talent as ninjas appears to be small, as they rely on tricks rather than actual fighting and the only skill they have is in cooking and poison-making. (The eldest created three unique and somewhat strange poisons in the hopes of killing Kakashi with them, and at least one was shown to work well enough to kill a frog that was accidentally exposed to it.) They were later defeated by Kakashi again, despite him having forgotten who the three were.

Nagato/Pein

Nagato was a former refugee from a war between the neighbors of Amegakure, where his parents were killed alongside those of Yahiko and Konan. His eyes are usually hidden by his long black bangs. While on the run, the three met Jiraiya, Orochimaru, and Tsunade, who gave the three food. They then asked for them to train them in ninjutsu, which, although Orochimaru and Tsunade were against the idea, Jiraiya took care of them. One day, Yahiko and Nagato went missing, and when Jiraiya and Konan found them, Nagato had already killed a Chunin from Iwagakure. When Jiraiya finally sees Nagato's eyes, he is shocked to see that they contain a ring pattern, which is most likely a dojutsu. Jiraiya also exclaims which makes the reader think that there is something special about Nagato. Nagato then later changed his name to Pein sometime later.

Yahiko

Yahiko is another of the three orphaned children taken in by Jiraiya. He has a strong "eye for an eye" philosophy, and hates the way Amegakure is looked at by the rest of the world and hates what it has become. Yahiko is also apparently defensive of Amegakure, saying that his dream is to stop the endless rain, which he compares to tears, and protect the nation's citizens. Although further details on his time with Jiraiya are currently unknown, it is known that due to unknown circumstances, Yahiko, Konan, and Nagato are now considered deceased. The actual state of Yahiko is currently unknown, although he bares a strong resemblance to one of Pein's bodies. Yahiko's name in Japanese means a "vulgar" or "mean child."

Yugito Nii

Yugito Nii (二位ユギト, Nii Yugito) is the Cloud kunoichi who was the human vessel of the two-tailed demon cat. She was knocked out and captured by Akatsuki members Hidan and Kakuzu, despite turning into her demon cat form to fight them. Like other hosts, she has physical features that resemble her tailed beast. In her case, her eyes are slanted and cat-like. Yugito claimed to be the second strongest in Kumogakure. Not much else is known about Yugito. Yugito later appears during the extraction of the two-tailed demon cat, leading to her death.
