The Turbo is a family of trains operating on the UK railway network. These trains are all diesel multiple units and there are currently 6 classes of turbos. The turbo family can be split into two separate branches; the Network Turbo, which is part of the Networker series and the Turbostar.

Trains

Network Turbo

This branch includes two classes; the suburban Class 165 and express version Class 166. These trains were built for the Network SouthEast sector of British Rail. Network SouthEast wanted these classes to replace the heritage DMUs as part of large modernisation plans for the mainlines out of London Marylebone and the local lines out of London Paddington. However, these two classes still operate as far out as Birmingham, Worcester and Hereford!

Class 165

A 165 in Network SouthEast livery.

The Class 165 is a 2 and 3 car Diesel multiple unit (DMU), built for suburban/rural workings. This class is also related to the Networker family of trains. Upon privatisation Chiltern Railways and Thames Trains (replaced by First Great Western Link, now First Great Western) operate the class. The Class 165/0 batch are one of the few units in Britain to have ATP installed. 76 units of the class have been built between 1990 and 1992.

Class 166

A 166 in First Great Western Link livery.

The Class 166 is a 3 car Diesel multiple unit (DMU), built for mainline workings. This class is also related to the Networker family of trains. Upon privatisation Thames Trains (replaced by First Great Western Link, now First Great Western) operate the class. 21 units of the class have been built between 1992 and 1993.

Turbostar

This branch includes 4 classes; classes 168, 170, 171, 172. All of these trains were built after privatisation by ADtranz (later Bombardier Transportation) for numerous train operating companies and were a natural progression from the Network Turbos. The Turbostar is widely accepted to be the most reliable 3rd generation DMU and therefore is the most popular type of DMU built after privatisation.

Class 168

A 168 in Chiltern Railways livery heading to Birmingham

The Class 168 (also known as the Clubman) is a 3 or 4 car Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU), built for TOC Chiltern Railways for their intercity route between London and Birmingham. The class was the first trains to be ordered and built since the privatisation of British Rail. The 168 is fitted with ATP and have a top speed of 100mph. 19 units have been built since 1997 and 2003[1].

Class 170

170433 in First ScotRail livery.

The Class 170 is a 2 or 3 car Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU), built for numerous operators. The first ordered was by Midland Mainline for their new stopping services between London and the East Midlands and were delivered in 1998. The class is popular as it is able to couple with the older Sprinter trains which makes it flexible. This class has a top speed of 100mph and 122 units have been built since 1998.

Class 171

A 171 In Southern livery

The Class 171 is 2 or 4 car Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU), built for Southern. This class is exactly the same as the Class 170 except that the coupler on the 171 is different. This class has a top speed of 100mph. 16 units have been built between 2003 and 2004.

Class 172

The Class 172 will be a Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU) and will be built for London Midland and possibly London Overground. These units are rumoured to have a top speed of 75mph and are similar to the Class 376/Class 378.
