The Taliban took the town in February of 2007 and have since established a drug trade and a head quarters there. It is the only major town held by the Taliban and is at the center of a major opium poppy growing area.
The Battle
On December 8, ISAF and Afghan troops mounted and three way assault on the town with US forces mounting an air assault via helicopter. As of December 9, the Taliban have withdrawn to take up new positions defending the town of Musa Qala.
