North Vista Secondary School (Abbreviation: NV; Chinese: 德新中学) is a secondary school located in Sengkang, in north-eastern Singapore.

The campus was relocated to Sengkang New Town from Thomson in December 2000[2]. Thomson Secondary School was renamed as North Vista Secondary School after the relocation. However, the school retained its Chinese name to preserve its historical links with the new school.

The school has over the years established itself as a vibrant school with unique programmes such as the 'O' Level Music and Physical Education programmes to provide a holistic education to its students.

History

North Vista Secondary School has an illustrious history. It started as Thomson Government Chinese Middle School in 1956, as one of the Government Chinese Middle Schools set up to cater to Chinese school students who had their studies disrupted by the Chinese middle schools riots, before it merged with Thomson Vocational School to be known as Thomson Secondary School.

When Thomson Secondary School was relocated to Sengkang Town on 15 December 2000, its was renamed North Vista Secondary School. The Chinese name of Thomson Secondary School was maintained to preserve its historical links with the new school.

Thomson Secondary School was one of the top four Chinese Middle Schools in the 1960s and during its 52 years of existence, the school has produced many outstanding individuals who have made their mark on society and contributed to the development of our country. They include politicians, senior civil servants, army officers, corporate leaders and sportsmen.

Year 2006 marked the school's Golden Jubilee. Celebrations were lined up throughout that year to commemorate the significant milestone in the school's history. The celebration events included a Torch Relay-cum-Homecoming Ceremony on 11 February 2006, a Golden Jubilee Concert on 8 April 2006, and a Gala Dinner in September 2006.

Today, the school continues to strive towards providing a value-added, holistic education to its students, more commonly known as Vistarians. The school has made its mark not just in zonal and national competitions, but even in international competitions.

Special programmes and facilities

North Vista is one of few schools in Singapore that have a unique school hour system. Every Wednesday, formal lessons start late at 11.00am to free up morning hours for Co-Curricular Activities (CCAs), in tandem with the school's objective of building up a vibrant and engaging CCA system.

The school is currently the North Zone Music Centre, offering the 'O' Level Music Programme to students in the northern area of Singapore. It has a music centre, Shaw Melodies @ Vista, specially built for this. The music centre is built from sponsorships by the Shaw Organization and features state-of-the-art music technologies such as musical keyboards and computers.

The school also has a Digital Arts Studio fully equipped with state-of-the-art Macintosh computers, used to digital high quality image creation and other multimedia works.

The school also offers Higher Chinese, as well as Physical Education at the 'O' Level. It is the only neighbourhood school in Singapore offering the GCE 'O' Level PE Programme. The other five schools offering this programme are established institutions such as Catholic High School, CHIJ St Nicholas Girls' School, and Singapore Sports School.
