iCarly is an American television series aimed at young teens and preteens, which premiered on September 8, 2007 on Nickelodeon. It first aired on YTV a month later on October 8, 2007, and now concurrently airs on The N.

The series stars Miranda Cosgrove as Carly Shay (the "Carly" of the show's title). Carly creates a webcast Internet program (also called iCarly) with her best friends, Sam, played by Jennette McCurdy, and Freddie, played by Nathan Kress.

Main Characters

Carly Shay

Carly Shay is a girl who created a webshow (iCarly) which quickly makes her a webstar. She works with her friend, Sam, who she describes as "rude and obnoxious". In "iPilot", it is said her father is in the military (in a submarine 3 miles underwater), leaving her 26-year old brother Spencer, who is also her legal guardian, in charge of her. Carly frequently drinks decaffinated coffee (Spencer switches it when she's not looking) and she has asthma, though she hasn't had an asthma attack since she was 7. Carly and Sam have been friends for 5 years (they became friends when Sam pushed Carly and stole her sandwich and Carly pushed her back and took her food back). Carly is played by Miranda Cosgrove. She was also in a show called Drake and Josh, she was their little sister.

Sam Puckett

Sam is best friends with Carly but often makes fun of Freddie. Sam is Carly's co-host in iCarly. In one episode, it is revealed she hates work of any kind. She has a picture of music stars, most notably Drake Bell. Sam likes ham, turkey bacon, and bacon flavored bubble gum. Sam is extremely aggressive, obnoxious, and rebellious. Sam has a tendency to commit theft and break-ins (she can expertly pick a lock and takes people's food on several occasions). Sam spends most of her time at Carly's house, and makes herself at home there in order to avoid her mother, who is an extraordinarily poor caregiver. It is revealed that Sam was born in a bus. Sam is played by Jenette McCurdy.

Freddie Benson

Freddie is Carly's other best friend, and has a love/hate relationship with Sam (who teases him mercilessly). He is the technical producer of iCarly, and also Carly's across-the-hall neighbor. Freddie has a monsterously large crush on Carly, and is something of a pushover because of it (though he does have his limits, he will do virtually anything for Carly.) In iSpy on a Mean Teacher, it is revealed that Freddie is highly allergic to bees. Freddie is played by Nathan Kress.

Spencer Shay

Spencer is Carly's 26 year-old brother, who is in charge of her since their father is in the military. He is an artist and in almost every episode he can be seen making sculptures. It was revealed in the episode iWanna Stay With Spencer that he dropped out of law school to become an artist although it is revealed in iGot A Sponsor he was only in law school for 3 days. Spencer is played by Jerry Trainor, who also played "Crazy Steave" in Drake and Josh.

Other Characters

Principal Ted Franklin

Ted Franklin is the Principal of Carly's school. He is very fond of Carly and Freddie and is also used to seeing Sam in his office and giving her detention. Ted has daughters who love iCarly. Principal Franklin is portrayed by Tim Russ.

Ms. Francine Briggs

Ms. Francine Briggs is a teacher at Carly's school whom she and her friends like to make jokes about. She also taught at the school when Spencer was a student. She has a crush on Randy Jackson and has lots of pictures of him in her closet and a talking cardboard cut-out of him, plus assorted Jackson-related merchandise. Francine is fond of exercising, as seen in "iSpy a Mean Teacher", in her spare time. She also loves Scottish bagpipe music and has played them once on Carly's webshow (having secured a spot on the show by threatening the cast and crew with expulsion and criminal charges for breaking into her house). According to Sam's blog on iCarly.com, she tampered with the school computer system and she apparently got Miss Briggs fired. Francine is portrayed by Mindy Sterling.

Lewbert

Lewbert is the doorman of Carly and Freddie's apartment complex, who is known for stealing cookies from small children. He has a huge wart on his left cheek. He tends to get irritated when too many people are in his lobby (especially after he's just mopped). He is a victim (without knowing) in the segment "Messin' with Lewbert" on Carly's webshow. Lewbert is also a self-proclaimed jerk, frequently misinforming the residents of the complex.

Ms. Benson

Ms. Benson is Freddie's overprotective mother. She often embarrasses Freddie in front of his friends, and is overbearing and nosy. It was revealed in "iRue the Day" that Ms. Benson doesn't give Freddie much allowance ($8 a month) because she's afraid that he will buy a bus ticket and leave her (However, in one episode, Freddie says that Ms. Benson's reason isn't so crazy, perhaps suggesting he might leave his mother eventually). Ms. Benson loathes Spencer so much and always spies on him because she is afraid that he will put her son in danger. Ms. Benson is portrayed by Mary Scheer.

Jeremy

Jeremy is a sickly kid at Carly's school. He's constantly sneezing and coughing. Sam, Freddie and Carly refer to him as "Germy" as he is the germiest kid in school. It was revealed in "iNevel" that he has had a cold since the first grade. Jeremy is portrayed by Nathan Pearson.

Minor characters

  • Mr. Howard: A teacher at Carly, Freddie and Sam's school. He hates everything-- children, laughter and even his own wife. He first appeared in "iGot Detention", he gave Sam detention for throwing a football in the halls, and gave Carly detention just for slamming a locker. It was revealed during the iCarly 50th Show Spectacular that he wishes to be in charge of the school instead of Principal Franklin. When Principal Franklin got wind of this while watching the show, it was likely Howard was fired. He likes to watch the Geometry Channel during detention hours.
  • Grandfather Shay (Greg Mullavey): Grandfather Shay, frequently referred to as "Granddad", is Carly and Spencer's grandfather from Yakima. He originally feels Spencer is incompetent as a guardian, but changed his mind in "iWanna Stay With Spencer" after Spencer brought Carly her asthma inhaler "just in case." He exercises daily, a habit he cites as the reason behind his ability to walk on his hands.
  • Gibby (Noah Munck): Gibby is a kid at Carly's school, whom Sam constantly insults, blames for her actions, bothers, and apparently expells him when Sam tampered with the school computer system. He seems to be Sam's second-favorite target, behind Freddie. He likes spelling bees and Ryan Seacrest.
  • Nevel Papperman (Reed Alexander): Nevel is an 11-year-old web critic, whose website, Nevelocity.com, receives five billion page views per day. He had a crush on Carly when he first met her, and began harboring a major grudge when she revealed that she did not feel the same way about him. He has since attempted to exact revenge upon the iCarly crew ranging from a non-honest review to hacking into the webcast which would ruin the Plain White T's performance, but thanks to the assistance of Carly's dad's war buddy Colonel Morgan, Nevel's plot was foiled.
  • Wesley (Colin Spensor): Wesley is a short, African American boy. He is shown all the time with a microphone, constantly beat-boxing.
  • Adam Sandler Himself: A real Hollywood star that will appear in the TV Movie iGo to Hollywood.

Running Gags

  • Almost in every episode, Spencer is making something, except in the episodes iDream of Dance, iWill Date Freddie, iRue the Day, and iHatch Chicks.
  • Socko is mentioned many times, but never appears.
  • Sam tells Carly, Freddie and Spencer many times that her Mother never feeds her that much and that she is gross.
  • Sam's mother is mentioned many times, but never appears.
  • Freddie's mom being over protective.

Hidden Appearances

  • In the Opening credits you can see the name "ToonJuice" which is the website that Chase and Michael design cartoons for on Zoey 101.
  • In the Zoey 101 episode "Anger Management", when Quinn is trying to get Lola to talk to her, Lola goes on her dorm's computer and goes to iCarly.com. Also in the same episode, you can hear Logan's anger clip on SplashFace, a website shown in the iCarly episode "iPilot". SplashFace is a parody of the popular video-sharing website YouTube.
  • In the Drake & Josh movie Drake & Josh: Really Big Shrimp, in the first scene with the outside shot of The Premiere, the movie listing says "Now She's Carly," hinting towards the fact that Miranda Cosgrove changes from character Megan Parker to Carly Shay.
  • In an episode of Zoey 101, while Lola is looking for a ringtone on her cellphone the iCarly theme plays in a digital style, and she picks it as her ringtone.
  • In the Zoey 101 episode "Vince Is Back", when Zoey and Quinn come in the Boy's dorm room, Michael and Logan are on iCarly.com
  • In Sam's locker you can see Drake Bell.
  • In the episode "iWanna Stay With Spencer", after he explains to Spencer about Carly going to live with him, Grandfather Shay tells Spencer that he's staying in the Parker-Nichols Hotel. This is a direct reference to creator Dan Schneider's previous show "Drake and Josh" (in which Cosgrove also stars in). In Drake and Josh, Drake Bell portrays a character with the last name of Parker, while Josh Peck portrays a character with the last name of Nichols.
  • In the opening credits, the website, Hungry Girl can be seen since Dan Schneider, the producer of the show, wife created Hungry Girl.
  • In "iHatch Chicks", Freddie finds information on chicks from "Chickipedia", a pun on Wikipedia.
  • In the episode "iGot A Sponsor" the shoe company Daka wants to be promoted on iCarly. Drake's song in Drake & Josh: Really Big Shrimp is sponsored a Daka shoe commercial. Daka is a parody of the popular athletic shoe company Nike. Nike's trademark "swoosh" sound is also parodied by a "whoosh" sound; on the webcast, Carly and Sam say, "Go out and buy Tech Foots!" and then whisper, "Whoosh! By Daka."
  • In "iGot a Sponsor", the Daka Seattle office building is actually the Seattle Public Library.
  • In "iGot a Sponsor", Carly gets an E-mail message on an iPhone, later determined to be called the PearPhone by Principal Franklin.
  • In "iGot a Sponsor", Carly takes Spencer to a Lexus car dealership.
  • In the episode "iSpy a Mean Teacher", the cereal Carly and Freddie eat is called "Randy Yo's" which is a parody of "Cheerios" and Randy Jackson.
  • In "iGot a Sponsor", the sunglasses Carly gets are from Mercedes Lens, a parody of Mercedes Benz.
  • In "iGot Detention", Spencer makes a 10-foot cup of coffee, with a label of "Skybucks" on it, a pun on Starbucks.
  • "iGot Detention" was the third time the iCarly's webcast was done outside the studio (counting the time they went downstairs, and then back up a few minutes later, and to find out if an apartment is really haunted).
  • In "iHatch Chicks" Chuck Norris's name was mentioned.
  • In "iAm Your Biggest Fan", Freddie says that Mandy gave him a gift card to Bandana Republic, a parody of the clothing store Banana Republic.

Video series on iCarly.com

  • Wake Up Spencer - Sam and Freddie wake Spencer up in the middle of the night and tell him ridiculously random things, such as "Name two numbers between 7 and 8!" (This is actually a rational question because two examples would be 7.25 [7 1/4] and 7.5 [7 1/2]), "Why are you at my house?", "Did your shoes eat the rabbits?", "There's a whole bunch of French people in the closet!", "Which is better: spicy tuna or yellowtail?", "Do you remember your third grade teacher?", "What did you do with the alphabet? I can't find the alphabet!!", "Quick, turn left! You ran over a hobo!", etc. All the while, Spencer is half-asleep.
  • Hey, What Am I Sitting On? - Sam, Freddie, and Spencer host a game show in which one person (so far, Sam or Spencer) must sit in the "Chair of Wonder" after another person has put the mystery item (meatloaf, a birthday cake [with 12 candles], macaroni and cheese, etc.) on it. The person in the chair, who is blindfolded, has 20 seconds to guess what they are sitting on. When Spencer was sitting on meatloaf, he never guessed it because he got a butt cramp.
  • Make Your Own Web Show! - Carly, Sam, and Freddie give tips on how to make a web show, such as rehearsing, choosing a cool set, choosing the right co-stars, getting excited, good lighting, etc.
  • Sam Orders Food - Sam places an order on the phone and gets it for free by scaring the delivery person out of the room. So far, she has gotten a free Mexican fiesta platter and a free meatball sandwich.
